I’ve read the first book and it was pretty good. Started the second but haven’t been able to get into it. Saw the movie this past weekend with my wife and I can safely say that I hated the movie. As other’s have said I won’t give up any spoilers in this thread but felt that it was just plain bad. It seemed to move way too fast and I really felt that if you had not read the books you would be completely lost. The whole story felt underplayed.

Yup

First book was really good. Second pretty good (repetition combined with giving more time to the things I didn’t like about the first book), third is just ok.
I enjoyed the movie. Didn’t fuck it up too much. But I would have wanted to see Cato vs Thresh
Damn! I am still going to see it, but I was hoping they would put that in the movie. In the previews it looked like they were going to show other things that you had to use your imagination in the book.

If anything you have to use your imagination even more for the movie than the book: there’s really only one graphic scene (which admittedly does push the rating) and most of the other deaths occur off-screen. To compensate, the script focuses more on Katniss’ POV during the games (cue lots of ‘Katniss Everdeen sitting in a tree - B-O-R-I-N-G’) and the love triangle is pushed to the forefront to appeal to the Twi-hards (they are the intended audience, after all).
For a story that crowbarred unsuitable material into a PG-13 and tried to make up for the excised gore with teenage moping and ointment-rubbing, it was weirdly enjoyable.
I enjoyed the movie more 7yrs ago when it was made in Japan.
Battle Royal
(in the future the Gov is tired of bad students. They round up the worse and take them to an island. Only one is to leave out of the whole class. Each is given a bag and a running start. Each bag has items that may help like a gun or may not help like a large spoon…good luck)
Maybe I should give the books a try…because I was bored as hell with the movie. Everyone has their tastes…so I’m no way going to write it off as garbage…but is this a case of them fucking up with the adaptation from book to the screen??
I think you guys aren’t the target audience of this movie. PG13 is right in the wheelhouse. Besides R being almost always the kiss of death from being a true sales blockbuster.

Sorry for digression, thought I recognised it.
I study petroleum geology, are you involved with geology in anyway?

Pretty much. The books are enjoyable but not amazing. Easy to pick up and put down. The movie was just terrible imo.

I didn’t see the movie, but I’d say don’t waste your time with the books, unless you’re a 13 year old girl.

I read the first one, thought it was awesome until the actual games, then it turned into Twilight: Dystopian Future Edition. The ending promised more of that and then some, so why would I want to read the other two?
It was like enjoying a delicious, exotic piece of fruit, and then taking a bite only to find that the rest of it is completely rotten. Maybe my expectations were peaked too high from the first part of the book, but I’ve never been so high on a book and then left so disappointed at the end.

Hey man if you liked the first one then maybe you’ll be ok. I loved it until the last third or so. I have no idea what the other two are like. The plus side is they are fast reads so you’re not investing that much into them, especially if you read that much.

Yea I like fantasy books and with the easy reads I can put them down in one evening. Its not LOR or Enders game for sure, I actually normally do not like the protagonist that are female driven. But I thought it did a decent job of making this 16 year old girl pretty resilient.
My son read the first one and thought what you thought. He’s 17 btw.
To me I saw this plot a bazillion times already do I’ll pass.

Acting?
Did they get away from the book?
To childish?
Well the most accurate would be too childish. Like I said, don’t wanna spoil. The books may be better, haven’t read them.
I hated how they basically never forced the main characters to make any difficult moral decisions…there was always a convenient “other way”. Hard to explain, but if you watch it with that in mind you should see what I mean.
The book is the same way. It’s a bullshit teeny bopper romance novel.
