Regardless of your opinion on him… you cant deny his impact on pop culture.
Jesus Christ this hits HARD. The Hulkster was a HUGE influence on me as a kid. I was so motivated by him to grow up big and strong. I was a fat kid growing up, and I remember seeing this special on Nickleodian where he detailed his own chubby childhood and overcoming it. It inspired me so much.
I’m going to have to watch Suburban Commando again.
On my Mount Rushmore of Wrassling
saw him twice…once at the pittsburgh arena against the Iron Sheik in 1984 and the other in west palm beach against Macho Man Randy Savage in the late 80s
First Ozzy and then Hulk. Such icons of the 80s/90s.
I’m pretty sure we were at that one too! My one buddy & his Dad were huge wrestling fans and he rounded up all of the kids in the neighborhood to go down to the Civic Arena for the big show!
Was just about to ask, doesn’t it always comes in threes? Then …
We spent many happy school recesses running wild and practicing sleeper holds, camel clutches and pile drivers on our friends. What’cha gonna do? We even knew all the crappy words to all the crappy songs from the first Wrestlemania album. Sometimes love is like a slow dance…
Thanks for the happy memories. The Thiel Gawker thing was sorta weird. Trump you can keep.
I’m still saying my prayers and taking my vitamins. My pythons never surpassed 19” but my vitamins were cleaner than Terry’s. There’s only one Hulk Hogan.
Woke up to this and just cant believe it. Sadly for those of use who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s there will lots more legends like this that pass away. RIP Hulkster, I will add some extra arm sets to my session today just for you.
Truly an end of an era death. No one had whatever X factor hogan had, not the rock or Austin or John cena (who’s heel turn doesn’t even begin to match 1% of what hogans did the industry)
The whole industry just had a different feel to it in the 80s as well, largely in part to hogan and the crew then. Due to what wrestling is now and how everyone knows it’s a work I don’t think it’ll ever happen again either
Maybe the Rock? I’m not that sure I’d want to smell whatever Hogan is cooking?
I kid. Hogan had a lot of charisma.
Not to diminish the rock and Austin, absolutely on the Mr Rushmore of wrestling, but Hogan was a worldwide phenomenon that took wrestling into the stratosphere and his NWO turn completely lit the industry on fire again 10 years later.
Part of why I dont think it will ever happen again is that Kayfabe is dead. I dont know all the psychology that goes into it but the idea that it was “real” back then injected something intangible into it that just cant be replicated today (try as hard as they might to make it “real”). The Austin character was the last one to really, really take advantage of that in his feud with Vince, and the Rock just has that undeniable charisma. He was a star that happened to start in wrestling instead of acting
Not exclusively about Hogan, but some great history of the industry and the era.
I maxed a PR all time best lift today, the lift has been on my mind for weeks and weeks month and when I heard the news, I decided today was it.
I’ll be posting it in my journal, but I was thinking about Hulkster right up to the lift.
