Hughes Brothers

I recently rented on DVD “From Hell”, a 2001-film adaptation of the “Jack The Ripper” story starring Johnny Depp, Heather Graham and Ian Holm (who is just as creepy in this as he was as “Ash” in the original Alien!)

The biggest surprise (to me at least) was that it was directed by Albert and Allen Hughes (or the “Hughes Brothers”), a talented, funny pair of real-life brothers who happen to be African-American. (Their “claim to fame” was “Menace II Society”).

These are two VERY talented young men, loved by actors and their piers alike. Given the chance to do more, they will leave their mark on Hollywood. Watch for the names.

I haven’t seen the movie, but I have read the comic book that From Hell is based on (I have it as a “graphic novel”) - and the book is magnificent. While I believe that the Hughes Brothers are undeniably talented, I am just afraid the movie won’t live up to the standard of the book. But I’ll be checking out the DVD VERY soon - maybe once I’m done with my Legends DVD (which is “oh my god” GREAT!).

Pat: What is “Legends” all about?

Mufasa: check out www.amazon.com in the DVDs’: use “Legend” as your search topic. IT’s a flick directed by Ridley Scott that came out in 1986. It starts Tom Cruise, Mia Sara and Tim Curry (under a pile of makeup FX as “Darkness”). Basically, Ridley Scott, after having done The Duellists (a good, good, flick BTW), Alien and Blade Runner, wanted to do a “fairy tale” like story. And this is it.

Amazing makeup FX by Rob Bottin (Total Recall) as well as a beautiful set design: the whole forest in this movie was created entirely in a HUGE soundstage. Amazing. Check it out. I have a feeling, Mufasa you will like this movie very much. And as I mentioned before, the DVD is stunning.
