How could you leave Count of Monte Cristo out…It comes out September 10th.
One of the best movies ever (for entertainment value not necessarily cinemetography). Its got an amazing story, great fight scenes, a beautiful girl…Its up there with Braveheart and Shawshank.

Patricia: As always…outstanding!

A question about “Brotherhood of the Wolves”…the general feeling is that it was an excellent movie that had the “bad luck” of timing.(As I understand…it got crushed somewhere in between “Spiderman”, “Lord Of The Rings” and “Black Hawk Down” with not a lot of promotion.

Do you know much about the film? I’m thinking of buying it, because I love the genre…

Hey I remember you had a post about “The Transporter”. I thought whocares. Well I saw the commercial for it and it looks killer. The dude from Snatch is in it. I can’t wait. Near Dark who’s in that? When was it released? I love Vampire movies. I still wanna see “The Hunger” and this other one with these two hot vampire chicks making out but I can’t remember the name. Hehhe. No not porn. Yeah you probably don’t care about that last one.

*biltritewave: I didn’t put “Count of Monte Cristo” on the list, since I didn’t think many here had seen it or even appreciated it. Ko and I had seen it in the theater - and just went a ga-ga - definitely a good movie. As to elevating it to the heights of “Shawshank” or even “The Duelists” (Ridley Scott’s sword dueling classic), I don’t know. But unquestionable, a great addition to anyone’s DVD collection. Guy Pearce makes a great villain, no?

Mufasa: After a good friend had seen this flick and provided us with this comment: "there's this Iroqoi Indian (Dascacus), who can do 'kung fu' and carries this really wierd ax" - we kinda passed on it. Yeah, there's nudity abound, wild action sequences, and the editing is "all over the place" - but I'm going to rent this one BEFORE I buy it. For the record: I'm happier than all get out that Marc Dacascus is FINALLY getting some decent recognition! I think he's got the goods to be the next "big thing" in action flicks. BUT I heard it's one of them "stuffed to the brims" French action flicks and the only dude I know that could pull that off, decently, was Luc Besson - and he ain't directing this. SO, my friend, RENT before you buy. And tell me what you thought of it! I'd like to know!

Hey, the “last one” you’re talking about IS The Hunger. That’s the scene where Catherine Denueve’s character seduces Susan Sarandon’s character. Right? And Near Dark was released in 1988. The VHS version of this flick is VERY hard to find. Who stars in it? Why, Lance Henrickson, Jennette Goldstein -who will live forever as “Vasquez” from Aliens in my book. Oh, and Near Dark is written by Eric Red. You know, the dude who wrote a li’l movie named The Hitcher. Yeah, baby! Patricia - who must go and watch Blade II now!

what makes buying the dvd so much better than the vhs im kinda confused but if the movies so great then youd probably own it so why rebuy it on dvd and if you didnt own it on vhs why would it make it worthwhile on dvd shrug im sure some of yall have a ton of dvds but man whats up with this baseball card replacement for adults known as dvds ?

yaaaaawwwwnfest: DVDs’ require less space to store than tapes. DVDs’ provide a better picture (in most cases, a VERY, VERY clear picture) than VHS. DVDs’ are packed to the brim with info on the film - can’t do that with VHS. A DVD will last LONGER than a tape. Lastly, if renting a DVD, you don’t have the “be kind, please rewind” sticker on the disc - you don’t need to rewind a DVD.

Pretty simple reasons, really. And DVDs are not a passing fad. Many, many good reasons to get DVDs.

Cool. The Duelist? Tell me more.

nkeago: Ahhh, The Duellists. Came out in…'77. I think this was Ridley Scott’s first big feature as a director. And man, all the Scott Traits are evident here. Beautiful cinematography - especially the lighting. Grand sword fighting - some of the best sword fight choreography you’re going to see here. I think only “Rob Roy” was able to top these. The plot is set around the Napoleanic age and one French officer (Keith Carradine) insults another officer (Harvey Keitel) and they basically spend a lifetime trying to “preserve the honor” by constantly challenging each other to a duel.

It's really a very compelling movie. It's one of my favorite Scott films (after Alien, of course).

Oh, and another one you should see, is The Loveless. From 1982. It's Willem Dafoe's first movie. About a bunch of bikers heading toward, I think Florida for a big racing shindig and they have to stop off in a small Georgia town due to mechanical problems to one of the Harleys. Eventually, the shit hits the fan in a local bar there. It's directed by Kathryn Bigelow, her first movie to direct (she's the ex-wife of James Cameron and she directed Near Dark, as well as Strange Days, Point Break and most recently, K-19:The Widowmaker). If you can find this one: RENT it. I've been looking for it to buy it for like, FOREVER!

The Transporter looks bad ass, no question about it. Looking forward to City By the Sea (I’m a big DeNiro fan) and Knockaround Guys, as well (how can you NOT like Vin Diesel?).

As for Brotherhood of the Wolf…I highly recommend it. Many people complained about the subtitles, but I’m thinking that problem might be taken care of on the DVD, as was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I loved it even with the subtitles, however. Others complained that it had somewhat of a weak, cliche plot, but I personally did not see this at all (just trying to be honest and present you with both sides of the argument). Insanely cool martial arts action, cool plot twists, and one hell of a bad ass beast running around in the movie. If you like action movies at all, at LEAST rent this one.

…for all you folks eagerly waiting for The Transporter: “reports that just over a week before its initial release, the Jason Statham actioneer “The Transporter” has been pushed back four weeks to October 11th in order “to capitalize on the strong buzz the film has received in the past week” and to space out its schedule so not as to compete with their “Swimfan” project opening tomorrow”

Swimfan? - yeah, right. Swimfan would have taken all the $$ from The Transporter. Dammit, just release it now!

Patricia - who also really wanted to see this movie NOW.

You know it wasn’t the hunger I was talking about. I’m sure it had a seen like that in it. But it was some movie called…the vampire lover or something. It was not a porno. Hehe. I only saw a brief clip of it on this show that was talking about vampire movies etc.

Well, after I had entered that above reply (about The Hunger), I realized that there are a ton of “straight to video” vamp movies - and they all have the “female vamp seducing a female vamp in training” type scene. Speaking of “vamps” have you ever seen “Vamp” with Grace Jones? Not as good as “Fright Night” (one of my faves), but still entertaining.

Brotherhood of the Wolf was a terrific movie.I saw it earlier this summer and I couldn’t believe how good an action film it was since it was set in mid 1700s France.

Nope. But I saw Fright night. Didn’t like it. Lost boys, Interview with a Vampire and Bram Stokers Dracula are my faves. Oh and Blade and Blade 2.
