What is my background? I have been playing sports and lifting weights for over 30 years. I have trained with athletes, bodybuilders and power lifters.
Fitting in a few hours of training a day during a bulk is often not a problem. I don’t bulk when I can’t hit the gym. he isn’t training all day long no matter what his claim. He likely has a few training sessions a day but he isn’t lifting 9-5.
No one said he is lifting “9-5”, but you can bet he isn’t on some average “1hour a day” program like most people and even if he is only in the gym 3-4 hours a day, that would require way more calories than the average weight lifter.

How much muscle did I gain? Who knows but I gained 20#s or more of decent weight which I have since lost and am back to ~ 240.
Not the question. You are claiming he will NOT need that much food to gain 20+lbs of solid muscle in 6months or less. If you have not gained 20lbs of muscle in a time period like that ever, then why do you think your experience matters at all?
?
What bodybuilder who is really big hasn’t experienced everything you just listed? How does that stop anyone from doing it?
I mean, I treat patients everyday way older than that but you apparently have even more biology training and more experience and RESULTS in the gym?
I think one of the points that needed to be made is that Jackman is not a bodybuilder, I dont think he has been through proper bulks (and all that entails) before so all this is could be new to him.

Why would anyone try to bulk and spend only one hour in the gym? I thought it was understood that when doing the work in the kitchen you also have to do the work in the gym.
Who the hell made that claim? Someone merely pointed out that 6000 cals for a 42 year old man sounds tough. I concurred and shared my experience that bulking past 40 is tough and tears you up much moreso than at 20. Age matters.
I don’t know how many calories he needs and I also doubt that he will add 20 pounds of muscle although he will claim he did. Hollywood lies about these things.

Jackman isn’t a bodybuilder and 42 is late to start.
I thought you were an oral surgeon, I didn’t know your patients were old weightlifters. Did they wear out their teeth eating too much?

? You serious with this? I mean, you do know you are showing your inexperience with this, right?
I bulked up for years only being in the gym 40min a day.
One of the guys I used to train with in Florida posts here and can attest to that. Ask Jeekeu how long I stayed in the gym most days.
Every “problem” you listed is considered completely normal for any bodybuilder who has gained that type of size. The fact that you think “gas, cramps, and feeling uncomfortable” when making a gain like that means you are tearing up your digestive tract means you don’t really follow this lifestyle much.

Jackman is going to have to train much like a bodybuilder to pull that off…so him not being one before means nothing. I treat all kinds of people for all kinds of issues orally related…which for the record requires a full understanding of the human body. Anyone who doesn’t know this doesn’t know shit about the dental programs in the United States.

Good for you. Not really sure your point, you are claiming Jackman will spend all day in the gym and then claiming 40 minutes is enough.
You are showing your inexperience here. You think of Jackman as a bodybuilder when he is not. “Follow the lifestyle?” What lifestyle? I have been accused of living in the gym. I am an athlete not a body builder but I have body building friends. They don’t bulk year round. The old dudes that I sometimes lift with have the same problems I have. What ever you think is tough about your bulking is far worse when you are 40.

Jackman likely will not pull it off and will probably train with the fad of the week in Hollywood. You seem to believe what you read about these actors and celebrities.
You are dodging my question to share personal experience or scientific evidence that bulking past 40 is similar to bulking when young. In my experience it isn’t.

I assume you have been doing this a while.
How old are you?
No, not really.
I’ve been “bulking” (I don’t really like that word) for what will be 3 years in May. 170 → 270 and an RCH under 5" on my arms. I’ll be 40 this year.
What I’ve learned is that a lot of people talk about shit they know nothing about and that commitment to consistency, diet and intensity in the gym provides results that make what a lot of people type in these forums look like retarts.
If an “old” schlep like me can get results with 3 kids, busy lifestyle, traveling work, gimpy back, and shoestring budget, then a multimillionaire actor who’s job it is to change his body for a role with any number of professional trainers at his disposal and full time to dedicate should be able to. Ditto anyone else in these forums.

Of course he can make changes to his physique. I have no doubt he will be fit and muscular for the movie. The only question is will he really eat 6,000 calories a day and add 20 pounds of muscle. Those are large expectations for a man his age in the time frame he has.
I suspect these are Hollywood exaggerations and have shared my experiences trying to bulk at a similar age as Jackman.
I apologize that I am not a professional body builder and medical researcher on the subject but I don’t believe his claims. And we will never know the truth.

Why? What don’t you understand? Why do you say “for a man his age…”. He’s 2+ years older than me. I’ve just dialed back my intake from 4000+ cals daily. It wouldn’t take much to hit 6k if that’s what I needed to grow.
I do it for the giggles- He gets fucking PAID to do it.

You dialed back from 4000?
But 6000 would be easy?
Please. 6000 is probably a phony number and you outweigh him by how much?
And since you are 40 please compare your current experience to what it was like when you were 20.

Of course you can’t believe it…because you’ve never done anything like that.

I have added almost 100 pounds post high school and still look good and can run and jump. You?

That’s what I was alluding to earlier on. You’re around the same age and outweigh him by 60-70 lbs, yet you were gaining on less than 5,000 calories a day on average if I’m correct.
Again, I’m not saying he doesn’t need 6,000 calories or that he can’t gain 20lbs in 6 months. It was just surprising to hear given his age and current physique. I ask alot of guys on here how much they eat, can I can’t recall a single guy in his mid 30’s + and under 240 lbs who ate much. That’s why it was surprising. Not unfathomable, just surprising.

I am currently 130lbs heavier than high school…and look like a bodybuilder in the off season at this point in my opinion. I have also made that type of gain in that time period and know how much food it took and I wasn’t even training several HOURS a day for a movie role.

? How many guys here over 30 are really serious about making a gain like that? There may be 4 or less.
Once again, if I were to increase the time it took me to train by 3 or 4 HOURS AND added cardio for even one hour a day, I would have to drastically increase my food intake to keep gaining that type of weight…as would most people.

I am not putting pics of myself online nor am I going to say how much I can lift. I look like a dude in his late 40s that spent much time in the gym. I am not winning any awards but I get respect.

I agree with you. It is surprising and probably not accurate. Typical Hollywood BS. I am amazed any experienced lifter would assume it was the truth.

Well then, my guess is, for a MOVIE, they are actually going for “winning awards” in terms of how he looks on screen and his conditioning…so he will likely train differently than you and need more calories.
