Wayne pre autotune, the carter I and II were good, the drought series was also good, but carter 3 IMO was an all time low for wayne. Especially if you appreciated him before circa 2005.
Although he was very good in the albums and mixtapes above, he is not the best rapper alive and is by no means a beast on lyrics, he just happens to make very catchy music.

He started off with Cash Money back in '98 I think. First Juvenile came out with his album. Then Wayne was on BG’s “Bling Bling” track (yes that’s when everyone started saying it). After that he came out with his own album. I think it was The Block is Hot.
Glad somebody remembered it. i am not one much for mainstream music, but i certainly remember the video for back that ass up, or whatever it was called, getting incessant play in the dorm rooms in 99
Off-topic, but here’s an ollllld Jay-Z and Big L freestyle (Don’t think L is actually freestyling though. Pretty incredible if he is though.) Good stuff, except for Jay’s second verse.
SSC touched on the fact that Wayne has been doing this shit since he was 11. He is right. So is it far-fetched to believe that he is past his prime and is just a formula, pop artist now? Sometimes there comes a point when talent can get a artist popular, but marketing(money) is the only thing that keeps them there. Their actual quality goes down as they get more popular.
Almost how Three Six Mafia(if you can really still call them that)…are more popular now with their most garbage music…even to win an Oscar award for best movie song(wow). Their end was signified when Gangsta Boo left(If you know Three Six Mafia…but don’t know who that is…you should be slapped…lol). Yet they became “mainstream” with “Stay Fly”…and that horrible TV show.
DJ Paul and Juicy J are ultra-talented producers(hint!..not artists)…they are a waste now. Their name is what keeps them popular(They should change their name to Two Six-Toed Motherfuckers). Same with Wayne…people like him…just because he is “Lil Wayne.”

Good post; I agree totally with the three-six reference. It’s a shame that Lil Wayne’s quality of music has diminished, but can you really blame him? It seems that to make money in the rap game, you have to jump on what’s ‘hot.’ In the early 2000s, it was screw music out of Texas. Now it’s t-pain autotuning. It may sound like shit, but it’s making him money. Hard to stop doing something if you’re banking off it.

Supposedly he doesn’t write any of his lyrics down either, which is ridiculous.
This not writing shit down is another thing that pisses me off about these posers. There’s more and more artisits coming out claiming they don’t write their lyrics down trying to get a rep like Big,Jay and Pun. How do you know what he does behind closed doors in a studio?
“I read it on the internet, it must be true”
By the time it comes to record a song you better have your verses memorised. That doesn’t mean he freestyles all his shit. The punk bitch can’t tell the truth about using ghost writers let alone wether or not he writes his lyrics down. Maybe that’s why he was a better rapper 5 years ago, he actually put time and effort into his raps.
Weak minds believing weak shit from weak rappers that’s what that is.
When are you guys going to understand its all image for marketing’s sake? I suppose you think these gangsta rappers are still hanging on the block puttin in work eh?
Please.
And you’re weak minded because you seem to have some very strict definition of what rap music really is.
Well right now Wayne and the Young Money Millionares are Hip-Hop. Who hasn’t featured Lil Wayne on a track and out of those tracks when does he not kill it.
Truth is everyone wants Lil Wayne in their songs. That’ll triple the listeners and he kills it everytime.
btw on a side note saw Ghostface Killah last week, the gig was terrible, wasnt his fault the venue was shit and we couldn’t hear shit only distorted bass where we were it actually made me feel a little sick that I had been waiting too see one of my favourite rappers and couldnt hear what he was rapping, the venue left me feeling real greasy(annoyed) when I left, the odd thing was he started doing some GZA and ol dirty songs which I found a bit odd considering how extensive his catalogue is
I saw Ghostface perform about a year and a half ago and it was a great set. He had his swagger and played alot of his hits BUT, he skipped alot of his Supreme clientele stuff like ONE and BUCK 50 & WE MADE IT. He had a dope set but the crowd was SCREEAMING for ONE and he never gave it to us. He also had a live band with him so i guess it would be tough to just throw it on if they hadn’t practice it. Still all in all it was a great show.
I just don’t see what’s wrong with a “formula pop artist”. It takes a lot of talent to make good pop. Getting this big requires that you have something good about your music. In rap/hip-hop, that means good beats, good rapping, and usually both. Doing your marketing through guest verses and mixtapes won’t work if you have nothing to offer.
People will hear your verse/songs, and they’ll either like it or they won’t. If they like it, they’ll look for more. Weezy definately had to win people over to get this big… seems like people want to use every excuse in the book to explain why he got popular, other than him being a good rapper.
And Lil Wayne is not just an O.K. artist who’s become the most popular rapper on the planet. He’s got every quality of an important figure in hip hop. He’s extremely polarizing, a bunch of people who most likely are hip hop traditionalists (or just hip hop fans who are out of touch) can’t seem to figure out HOW he got famous (this thread is a beautiful example of that), he’s got a bunch of imitators following him, and some people think he’s a sign of hip hop dying.
He’s also the best example of a new model for music. Guy gave out ton’s of free music, and the second he put out some music that wasn’t free it was the fastest selling album IN YEARS, and the best seeling album in the United States that year. All of those mixtapes gave him a huge following, before he had any big media exposure. The guys who trace his success back to Lollipop need to get with the times.
I’m not necessarily putting you guys into this category, but most of the guys who complain about Wayne are the same guys who defend Jay-Z and 50 Cent, who have sounded as tired as ever in recent years. A lot of them are the same guys who fervently defend Relapse, the same guys who talk about Asher Roth’s “potential”. If there are any rappers who have been benefitting from top notch production and a popular name, it’s Jay-Z and 50 Cent.
Just listen to the singles relased off their upcoming albums, good beats (especially DOA), BAD rapping. I don’t even have to go into Relapse, and Asher Roth.
The first song I ever heard from Wayne was “Go DJ”
Initially, I hated it. I guess I was listening to the beat more than the lyrics. It took awhile before I started to pay more attention to the lyrics.
Needless to say, the man is a lyrical genius. I feel like no one can touch him when it comes to world play and creativity. All this talk about how its not real rap is bullshit. I think a lot of people define rap as having to deal with being in the hood and getting out. But honestly, all these rappers are not in the hood anymore. They’re making money, getting laid, and living the celebrity life. What I like about Wayne is that he can say the same thing in so many different ways. He puts out so much stuff, I’m still surprised he has anything left to say.
Lollipop DID NOT make him famous. He was big before that (i.e fireman, go dj, and all collaborations with other artists). Lollipop was kind of his sell out song to the public. But hey, hes making money and successfully put out a song that a lot of people can dance to. He is catering to a wider audience and thus raking in more revenue.
I lift to Wayne because he can get me juiced.

Why the fuck is there so much hate for Lil’ Wayne around here?
The funny thing is, is most people don’t realize he’s been doing this shit since he was like 11 years old, lol! Dude’s been around the game MUCH longer than many, many, many big rappers today.
being around something for a long time doesn’t make u better. I just think he is overrated he has some nice beats but overnight in 08-09 everyone become lil wayne fans
Dude is a beast and I can’t wait for his Rebirth album to come out.

I’m not really looking foreword to Rebirth, but if you are I think some songs that may be on the album, or at least some leftovers are on his new mixtape. Mixtape’s called “My Face Can’t Be Felt” and it’s with Juelz Santana. I think one of the songs was called “I’m Not Human”. Not entire sure though, but check it out if you’re interested…
Edit: and it wasn’t really overnight, that’s the point many in this thread are trying to make.
Wayne is fucking wack. No, his mixtapes are NOT dope. They suck just as much as everything else. Dude has like 5 songs that are decent off his mixtapes. Mabye 3 decent songs on The Carter 2. Don’t even bring up The Carter 3, that shit was terrible.
And whoever is saying Immortal Technique is great, raw underground shit needs to get their ears checked. That dude is pretty wack too.
Check out Crooked I, Blu and Exile, Mos Def, Big L, Jeru the Damaja, and Murs for some dope shit.
And yes, Blackout 2 was fire. “Hope in my truck and roll up the window, AYO!”
