Felt this def belonged in the beginner section. What is the standard way to write the loads used for a training session? I have seen it done multiple ways and I’m not sure which is correct. I always though it was weight x sets x reps. But I have seen people wrote it as weight x sets x reps. Just wanted to know what standard form was. Thanks
You realize both of your templates are the same right? weight x sets x reps.
That said, I always do weight x sets x reps. Doesn’t matter though, as long as you understand what you wrote.
If your posting something on a forum or something, just clarify it beforehand if you think it needs to be. I believe it’s more common to see weight x sets x reps rather then weight x reps x sets, but thats my speculation.
I either do…
sets x reps @ weight
or
(weight x reps) x sets
I sometimes throw an X in at the end if it was done explosively: 500 x 3 x 10X

Wow sorry for the confusion on writing those both the same. The way you wrote it seems to make the most sense to me, but as chobbs demonstrated it seems to be different between people. For my own training logs I just wanted it to be consistent, so I was wondering if there was a standard way. Thanks for your reply, and you as well chobbs

thats a good idea
I don’t believe there is a universal formatting convention. I log mine like this:
Squats: 135 x5, 225 x5, 315 x5, 365 x5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 225 x10.
This way, there is never any confusion whether I’m talking about sets or reps and it is easier for me to visualize how much work I have actually done. Even if I do 20 sets with the same weight, I’ll write each set out and maybe add a parenthetical:
Squats: 225 x3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3 (20 total sets, 60 total reps).
I tend to like sets x reps x weight because that’s how I would speak it aloud.
I’d say I did three sets of five reps with 225 pounds, so I write it as 3x5x225.

Yep to these.
In your logbook, it’s your own chickenscratch, so go crazy. In my notebook, I write Weight/Reps for each set. So if I did 4x4-6 overhead presses, I might write:
OHP 95/6 185/5 185/4 135/6
Out among civilized society, Sets x Reps is standard form. Nothing more confusing than a beginner saying they did squats 10x3, and I’m like, “Oh, fan of Waterbury? Cool.” And they’re like, “Who? Oh, no, I did 3 sets of 10.”
It gets highly individual when load is included and I always want to make sure that reps and weights are adjacent when I write it personally.
The only thing that I think should be set in stone is, in the absence of including load, it should be written sets x reps always.

Yeah that article was kinda what brought this to mind. I read it and was like, “now what does that mean?” Thanks for the reply Chris, and thanks to everyone else.
