How to train for sustained running speed?

It is for the military. I am considering joining the Marines as an officer after graduation, and the recruiter said I should aim for 24 minutes at the highest. I am preparing now. I am trying to overshoot the goal, which is typically how I go about setting and achieving goals.

Thank you for the pace goals and recommendations. I will see how I can go about achieving it. The recruiter said that if I do apply, then they train together leading up to the final date of the physical fitness test. But for now I will continue the interval training and long runs, knowing that I need to bring down my 1-mile and 3-mile far more than I thought.

I just re-read this comment, and wanted to make clear that this is the post that I’ve designed my interval training around. Thanks.

Nobody is mad and I wasn’t trying to imply that’s ā€œthe way;ā€ more so that you’ve plenty of options - the key is to pick something and get running.

What you said is basically what the Marine recruiter told me when I talked to him.

The problem is that you did not introduce your threads with the information that you are preparing for armed forces selection in X months time. Specialised, elite etc etc.
100 posts without that information is not good.

I had not made the decision when I made the first thread. Then it was just about general cardiovascular health. I finally made the choice just before posting this one.

Just wanted to provide an update. I made it into OCS and ship in January.
