How to increase appetite

This has always been the hardest thing for me when bulking. I CANNOT eat enough. There are days where I just literally have to skip lunch entirely because I just cannot begin to imagine eating anything. This is in spite of eating exactly the same thing for breakfast every day and following 90 minutes of weightlifting with 30 minutes of cardio in the morning.

I’ve seen there are drugs like Megestrol and Dronabinol designed for this but I’ve never found any sources that sell these. You’d think there’d be a market for it in bodybuilding communities. Is there anything else anyone is aware of that I could possibly try that might be easier to source?

This seems maybe too obvious, but if eating the same thing for breakfast everyday followed by 90 minutes of weightlifting and 30 minutes of cardio in the morning is making it so you AREN’T hungry, I would draw the conclusion that I need to change 1, if not more, of these things.

I would consider eating something different for breakfast, or not eating breakfast at all. Or I’d look at what I’m eating for dinner and see if that’s making me too full for the day.

What are you eating and when do you eat it?

Good point, @T3hPwnisher. I’ve had the same issue where a big, fibrous breakfast suppressed my appetite for hours, even though it wasn’t very calorie-dense. Swapping to smaller, more calorie-dense meals like whole eggs or shakes helped me eat more without feeling overly full. Cardio right after lifting might also blunt hunger for some people, so adjusting that could help.

Making your food tastier makes it easier to eat.

I’d also like to see what’s in that breakfast. I’ll bet we could speed up your gastric emptying by reducing fiber/ fats at that meal.

Alternatively, we could lean in and try to get like 100g fat in you twice a day.

Ear more calorically dense foods.
What does a typical day of eating look like for you? If you’re trying to eat 5000cals of chicken and rice I see where that would be difficult.

5 days ago he was looking for a “cutting cycle” to,

" So in short, I’m kind of stuck, I just cannot ever get rid of the last bit of belly fat that hides my abs when I cut I always hit a wall that no level of calorie defecit seems able to overcome without drastically reducing my overall muscle and really damaging my bulk gains. I want to finally really maintain my gains and knock all that stubborn fat out this time around."

Now, he has trouble eating enough to bulk and is looking for drugs to help??..ok

I didn’t say that. I said that it sometimes happens. Just to illustrate how extreme my lack of appetite in general can be, and to avoid comments along the lines of “maybe you ate too many calories for breakfast on those days” . Breakfast and routine is always the same so they can’t be a factor was the point.

If the concept of planning in advance is that weird to you I don’t know what to say

I have a smoothie every morning when I wake up and then I go to the gym immediately after.
800 calories
90g protein
60g carbs
15g fat

Lunch and dinner have almost the exact same makeup except higher fat contents.
I’ve struggled with appetite my entire life.

I didn’t say you did: I said what I would do if it were happening to me.

I’m not at all shocked to hear that: slamming 800 calories in liquid form is going to destroy most appetites.

However, your numbers don’t add up. You’re 65 calories short.

Have you tried increasing appetite by simply eating more? I know this may sound silly but the body is very good at adapting and learning a new eating routine. Just suck it up and force down some food for while and you should get used to it.

The other options is to simply eat tastier food that you like to eat (within your macros).

Why don’t you share exactly what a day of eating looks like for you . And by this I mean a real day not an imaginary one, also share what your calorie / macro goals are. We can see where the issues may lie or give you some suggestions.

This guy is on TRT as of 8 years ago: I can’t imagine this is true

Oh crap. :man_facepalming:

My sincere apologies. I mixed him up with another guy/kid. Will edit to reflect that.

Agreed. We’re saying the macros need to go up, so you can gain weight, but that appetite is the issue. Just telling us the macros doesn’t let us offer advice on how to improve appetite.

Is that smoothie full of fruit and whey?

May i ask what your goal calories are exactly for the day?

So your struggling to get 2400cals in? Add in more fats. Olive oil, peanut butter or something along those lines.
Not having an appetite is not an excuse not to eat for your goals. If your serious about what your doing you get the cals in. Mentally having no appetite and physically not being able to eat are two very different things.
I asked you to list out what you eat in a day and you have not. Why?

As a total aside, I do enjoy seeing “normal variance” between all of us with these types of things: I don’t struggle to eat 2400 calories in a meal!

I’ve struggled with the same thing—training hard but feeling zero appetite, especially after intense cardio. Instead of looking for hard-to-find meds like Megestrol, I’ve been trying low-impact strategies like the 28-day Wall Pilates Challenge from BetterMe. It helps with recovery, builds strength, and somehow made it easier for me to eat more consistently.
