Yep. Actually a colleague invited me to a barbecue tomorrow to celebrate this Summerday (most important holiday here) and she warned me that “you’ll be the only sober person there”, so I refused.

really? That sucks man.
You dont want to be known as the “outsider” when it comes to work people. I would DEFINITELY rethink that strategy of isolating yourself from the rest of your coworkers, especially in that casual setting.
Its a day time BBQ so there will be at least a few hours in the beginning when everyone will be sober. i would show up early, mingle a little bit and then when people start getting drunk you can make up something and politely excuse yourself.[/quote]
Actually I’m quite isolated from my coworkers already, but it’s more of a cultural thing. I don’t know any colleague who meets with other colleagues outside work except some Russians.
The main issue is that it’s outside the city and next day I’m working (at evening though), so I can’t just leave, I’d need to wait until the next day late morning, so I may not even get to the office in time. The second issue is that my colleague is planning to cancel the barbecue so she can go stay with me. I know where this is going to and I don’t want it so…
But yeah, if the barbecue was in the city, I could just leave when things start to get annoying. I’ve done that a few times already even in the company Christmas party, where all alcohol, no exception, was free…
