Any Non-Drinkers Here??

Just curious if there are people on here that don’t drink? It seems like everytime I go to a party or even a family gathering, everyone has beer in their hand (except the little kiddies). Is it just the “normal” thing to do? I’ve tasted it before and I’ve had about 2-3 wine coolers in my life, but thats it. Just doesn’t appeal to me really.

Please tell me I’m not the only one

I effectively don’t drink at all.
I haven’t at all in a couple of years.

Used to drink occasionally during my college years, but stopped completely 4 years ago.

Same here! I’ve had about 4 beers and a couple shots of rum all on seperate occasions in all my 25 years, but 99.9% of the time I don’t drink.

The reason most parties/gatherings are filled with people enjoying a drink is simple. It’s relaxing, sociable, and people enjoy it. Why not relax and enjoy a few beers while catching up on old times? The reason you have no desire to drink is because you’ve never been drunk. Get drunk with some of your best friends, go to some parties, hang out with girls, do childish, asinine things. It’s a winning formula that’s worked for people everywhere since the beginning of time. I’m not telling you to go get shitfaced every weekend because that’s the only way you’ll be able to enjoy yourself. I’m just letting you know that people drink for a reason:it’s fun.

me used to drink, but no more. i’ll drink again sometime, but like i tell those who wanna drink with me, “when i accomplish the things in my life that are important, i’ll have a drink with you.”

Yeah. I’m a non-drinker now. Wasn’t always though.

I’ll make a long story short. I started drinking when I was 12 years old. I was hitting it heavy and binge drinking by 14. I drank like a rock star until about six years ago (I’m almost 32). I finally slowed down when I met my wife. She didn’t drink much and wasn’t much of a partier (kept her shirt on).

My life changed about three and a half years ago and I stopped drinking. I haven’t had a drop since (other than the occasional non-alcoholic beer).

My friends all still drink socially, and they still get pretty ripped from time to time. They still welcome me and I have plenty of tolerance to hang out with drunk people. I have a good time and they enjoy having me around.

Is it the thing to do? In most circles that I’ve run in, it was definately the thing to do. Now, it seems that more of the “married w/children” folks that I hang out with, don’t drink as much.

In all honesty, I prefer a person that can kick back and have a beer. I used to be one. It’s just not in my best interest to drink anymore.

Quit drinking a long time ago. Never was very good at it really. And if you think I’m obnoxious now, you should see me drunk. Whoooo baby! But actually I have many reasons for not drinking:

  1. It is a real motivation killer. A couple of beers and I don’t feel like doing anything.
  2. As I said, I don’t like the person I become when I drink.
  3. Alcoholism on both sides of my family so that makes me homozygous.
  4. I drive a motorcycle - not a good mix.

Yeah, people think you’re a religous zealot or an alcoholic when you tell them you don’t drink. I’ve gotten past the weirdness and just tell them it doesn’t work for me.

I’m with ya brotha…can’t stand those wine coolers so I don’t drink 'em.

I’ve never had a drink.

I totally agree. I can relax with a big plate of spaghetti and some Grow! protein  I really don’t feel like getting drunk ever. I don’t really like the thought of puking my guts out the next morning and feel like crap. The only time I want to wake up feeling like a train hit me is due to a high intensity training session the day before

20+ years ago, while a grad student at UConn@Storrs, I learned to drink quite a bit. Then one Thursday night a friend dropped into the dorms to visit, and we went out to Huskies. I had a couple drinks, didn’t stay up too late, and got up at 7:00 the next morning to go work out in the Field House.

It was so clear that I wasn’t up to par, and that the alcohol wass till in my system, that I asked myself “What is drinking really doing FOR me?” There was no good answer, so I stopped.

I don’t know if you’d consider me an official “non-drinker” or not. I may have one or two month, tops, but I don’t avoid it like the plague.

It doesn’t help me in any of my goals so I don’t partake regularly or at parties/get-togethers, but sometimes I like a glass of wine with my fish when eating out with the wife.

Drinking is fun if you can control yourself, if not then you’re better off staying dry.

And don’t drink and drive, you might hit a bump and spill your beer.

I don’t drink.

I have been through several periods of heavy drinking. The first being in college, the last, not to long ago. Recently I have made a few life decisions to get out of a overly long and depressing rut, and getting away from the booz has helped a great deal in that regard.

I still go out ocassionaly with friends and tie one on, but it is the exception now, not the norm.

Hey Bro, I’ve noticed your posts are easier to read when you’re hammered, too.

Me neither…
