No, no one wants to be around an entitled, exploitive jerk, but nobody likes an insecure ass-kiss, either. Some self-love is healthy. When I’m confronted with a choice between “I like to look at myself in the mirror” and “I avoid looking at myself in the mirror” the healthy choice is the former, however narcissistic it might sound. The latter suggests self-loathing, which in my opinion is responsible for far more of the evil done in the world than narcissism is.

I think you have to make a distinction between a little bit of vanity and a true narcissistic personality disorder. People on T-Nation workout for different reasons. Some for looks, some for strength, some because their occupation requires fitness but we all probably glance in the mirror from time to time and say hey looking pretty good or take pride in some lifting related or athletic accomplishment. I agree that is healthy but true narcissists tend to be malignant people.

Most are unable to acknowledge their own misdeeds and beneath the grandiose behavior are full of insecurity. Some people can channel this in a positive manner. Think of an arrogant sob like Kobe Bryant putting in the work in the off season because he is driven like most narcissists and there is that kernal of doubt in his mind that someone else is working harder then him to be the best. Unchecked though and you have people like these corporate CEOs that raid 401k’s, run century old businesses into the ground, collect million dollar bonuses and walk away into the sunset without a second though about the irreparable damage they have caused to millions of people’s lives. All because in their minds they deserve it. That is a true narcissist.

I am too mild-mannered and disinterested to be bossy or authoritative. If a particular authority figure knows what he’s talking about and has more to him than bravado, I will gladly take the advice or orders that he gives. If the authority figure is just talking out of his ass for the sake of appearing like he’s running the show, he can fuck off.

I don’t let people run my life, per say. I am a realist. All of us are having our lives run in some way or the other, often by forces beyond our understanding.(no conspiracy theory)

When people deny this, they’re deluding themselves. It shows a weakness of naivety and a futility that anything can be overcome by individual will.

But we’re not talking about personality disorders here, necessarily. That test isn’t well written enough to test for personality disorders. It is (poorly) written to isolate the characteristic of narcissism, not diagnose disordered levels.

Admitting to being nervous when a cop follows me may indicate I have the characteristic “paranoia” to some extent, but it doesn’t make me mentally ill.

Still, even taken to extremes, I believe that the true (personality disordered) narcissist is less dangerous to society on whole than the person who feels left out and walked on and without value.

Dude - if you’re that incredibly good looking, why do you have no pics in your profile?

I would think any real narcissist would have a ton of them posted…

Any real narcissist would never have taken the test to begin with. They already KNOW they’re awesome. Tests are for Pretenders.

Aren’t they often the same person? I’m thinking it is the narcissist who sees greatness in themselves but doesn’t get the attention they think they deserve is the most dangerous of all.

As for the test I found that both questions were true in some cases. For example, yes I like compliments usually but they still make me embarrassed.

Personally I find myself wavering between confident and insecure constantly. I try to keep either extreme to myself though. I think if I ever settled in one direction or the other, I wouldn’t have any motivation, not to mention being annoying to be around.
