How Muscles Grow (Maybe)

From the video description:
“Depicts a proposed mechanism for how bundles of contractile proteins aid in increasing the strength and size of a given skeletal muscle.”

Not true. How could she possibly know? She doesn’t even lift weights!

lol

Other than the crazy pronunciation (might just be American, but about half the science words are different to how we pronounce them), she might be on to something. Doesn’t tell me how to get boulder shoulders though, so who cares.

haha quite honestly i just went on this thread to see if iron dwarf had a new avatar, and lo and behold he did, haha

I’ve done that too, lol!

That is a nice avatar, ID, well done.

Hey guys,

I’m the brains behind the animation; I probably should have posted this myself with an explanation. This animation was made for a project at the Medical College of Georgia’s medical illustration Master’s program.

But first off - I do lift weights! I’ve been lifting for 2 years, love it, and am a lean 115 lbs, 5’5’, squatting more than 1.5 times my body weight.

As far as the science behind this, I poured through as many text books, scientific papers, electron micrographs as I could find and talked to specialists on campus. I’ve done my homework.

It’s known that myofibrils increase in both size and number during strength training; this animation shows a proposed mechanism put forth by G. Goldspink, 1970, for how this happens – no one really knows exactly, even 30 years past the publication of this paper, but this idea has backing in several other books and papers.

This is by no means the only cellular event behind muscle growth and strength gain (hello increases in connective tissue, vascularity, mitochondria, synchronization of nervous system firing, differences in fiber types…), but how myofibrils grow and multiply is a major one.

Here’s a link to that paper: The Proliferation of Myofibrils During Muscle Fibre Growth | Journal of Cell Science | The Company of Biologists
Here’s my website if you’re curious to see what else I’ve done: www.micromacroart.com

Hey Paintsplotch!

Nice work!

I don’t believe this!!

ID your favorite movie is The Incredibles and why do you have a CAPE?!
ps I feel so much smarter now from that animation.

Wait, Fuzzy… how did you know The Incredibles is my favorite movie? It IS in my top 10 in fact!

The cape was just a nice graphic touch. I mean just look at that luminous red!

Didn’t mean to scare you lol. But I think you posted in in the “More movies you watched this week” thread. About watching it for the millionth time with your kids. FYI I retain information weirdly. Don’t know why that stuck with me aha.

haha! Actually, my kid’s 17 and couldn’t care less, so I always watch it alone.

Uh… I think I have a crush on Paintsplotch. The brains, the glasses, the cute smile and nice deltoid.

Anyone else.

I have a crush on her. But she’s my girlfriend (for serious). That’s why I found this video and posted it.

I’m flattered, Iron Dwarf!

And I’d be a little concerned if boyscout didn’t have a crush on me.

As for the pics, just uploaded an (old) pullup pic to my profile. I can do more of them now.

i can do a thousand of em.

let’s rename this thread ‘’ Iron Dwarf has a new avatar’’

cool one, but my favorite was the guy who was hitting a anvil and the guy curling a weight in the water

Nicely done PS, interesting stuff.
