How Much Training Before Competing?

I trained for 6 weeks before my first fight but I had a decent wrestling background beforehand. With no combat sport background I think it would take a LOT longer to be competent and/or comfortable in the ring/cage.

Some of it can even be personality type too…
I’m a softy and struggle with the fact that i prefer to disable rather than aim to kill.

I’ve always been physically ready to fight but when I went up against someone who just wants to fuck me up rather than win, I got a suprise.

You might spar hard out with people but at the end of the night they aren’t aiming for a brain clot. The only training for that is unfortunately the experience itself.

I promised myself I wouldn’t get back in the ring until I could get a hold of that aspect.

It really depends on the fighter and the quality of he guys in the promotion. I went into my first fight with nothing but some judo torney experience when I was a kid. Then again the guy I fought had none either. I won, but only after I’ve been training for real now do I realize why everyone was so dead set againste doing it.

The quality of fighters in my promotion is getting better, but nothing like the stuff here where I train. I’ll have a month of experience for my next fight. Then again im training with some stellar dudes and fighting some not so experienced guys at the same time.

best wishes to you, good luck! post how you go.

My mother was totally against me fighting. Didn’t stop me… still one of the best things i’ve ever done.

I’m busting my competition cherry @ NAGA this weekend in Boca Raton. Heavyweight No-Gi Novice and Gi White Belt.

Any tips from my fellow BJJ players?
