How Much Did Mentzer "Borrow"

Bit of fun really: How many different exercise methods or analogies did Mentzer promote under the Heavy Duty umbrella when they first came from Jones and / or Darden? I’ll start.

  • Infitonic exercise (Mentzer) (originally Negative Emphasis Jones / Darden)

  • You only need to tap a stick of dynamite once (originally Jones)

Exercise methods

Underhand chins or pulldowns for biceps

Dips for triceps

both from Jones and Darden

  • Infrequent / high intensity workouts (Jones)

  • Pre-Exhaustion (originally Bob Kennedy and utilised by Jones)

  • Static Contraction (John Little)

Huh?

I was thinking its the other way around

Exactly. I don’t associate the name Little with original thought.
Except maybe 2” ROM Toyota Leg Presses — I think he invented those!

Little first tabled Static Contractions around 1996. Mentzer first spoke of them in Muscle Media 2000 about a year or two later. They don’t really work anyway.

I believe Peter Cisco was the fellow who was pushing 2 second static holds using Toyotas. On another note, I remember the first time I read Heavy Duty I how surprised I was at the amount of material I seemed to remember having previously read in The Nautilus Book (Ellington Darden) and material from Arthur Jones in his memos, etc.

And another… “The Indirect Effect” (Jones), although this video does recognise it came from Arthur

That was in collaboration with Pete Sisco so he was only partly responsible for that insanity.

John Little was writing articles for Bodybuilding Monthly in the UK in the mid to late 80s. He was pushing static holds then, long before I even heard of Peter Cisco.

Actually, now that I think about it, the Toyota Press was a Cisco/Little joint venture — emphasis on joint

Chuck Sipes used Static Holds in the 60’s, and I am sure he borrowed the technique from John Grimek or somebody else. They worked for Sipes, as he could bench 510 and won a few major titles. He stayed consistent in what worked for him once he found it.

Everybody borrows from everyone else. Thats how bro science got started.

Find what works for you and do it.
