How Many Times Per Week Should I Train a Muscle Group?

Hi there everyone. Just to let people know, I do have a novice background in strength training. I’ve been training seriously for approximately 7 months. I wasn’t following any particular program for 6 of those months. Approximately 2 months ago, way before I started Stronglifts 5x5, I was having trouble squatting 125 for a set of 12. However, I started Stronglifts three weeks ago today. I did the A workout for Stronglifts this morning, and I was just messing around in the gym this afternoon. I found that I could squat 155 x 15. After that, I did 175 x 3. But my question is, how did my squat increase so much from light weights 3x a week? Thanks in advance for any input you guys may have.

Novice gains bro.

Yes. Light weights will make you stronger as long as you implement progressive overload. If you are going all the way down and not half repping your knees will be fine. Also i wouldn’t recommend not doing any back work. Otherwise you are going to have posture problems.

Sounds like you started using gear.
If you say you haven’t, then you’re lying.
If you’re not lying then your supps have probably been spiked with orals or someone is jabbing you while you sleep.

I would replace stronglifts with Ice Cream Fitness 5X5. Way better program for novice lifters. Search Jason Blaha Ice Cream Fitness 5X5 on Google.
If you still want to run Stronglifts, add some Rows on workout B.

A:

  1. Squat - 5X5
  2. Bench Press - 5X5
  3. Row - 5X5
  4. Chin Up - 3X5

B:

  1. Squat - 5X5
  2. Deadlift - 1X5
  3. Military Press - 5X5
  4. Row - 5X5
  5. Bench Press - 3X8

Do this then.

Also, didn’t you say yourself that novices can bang out a 1RM on Monday, recover on Tuesday, and beat that 1RM Wednesday?

He did say that.

In the same format as stronglifts 3x a week alternating “A, B, A” every other day? And with the weights i last left off with today?

Yes. It looks similiar to Jason Blaha’s Ice Cream 5X5.

He’s past 6 months of training so he cant be a noob. The preworkouts look suspect but you can’t rule out your dad coming in the middle of the night and jabbing. Do you wake up with what looks like mosquito bites in the morning?

Okay thank you very much.

Np. You are doing great for being only 15 years old. That’s the magic of basic programs like Ice Cream 5X5. I like that you are skipping the pump & fluff exercises.

I know guys who have been training for years and they are still small and weak, are they intermediates? If you are squatting less than 3 plates, benching less than 2 plates and deadlifting less than 4 plates you are still a novice. Some guys might exceed that.

No, my dad isn’t forcing me to lift :sob:. I do it for my own strength and physique. It also helps me relieve stress. Generally, I also go to bed later than my dad because of all the homework and tests I have. I go to sleep at 11 and wake up at 5. Literally.

… are you having a conversation with yourself?

Yea, I used to do bicep curls and not train legs. But I moved past that stupid phase of quote-on-quote “lifting”. My arms are bigger now than they were when I did arms and chest and nothing but arms and chest. I haven’t curled in months.
