it cost me my gym and half of my work duties.if it gets much worse out there, the other half would be in jeopardy. I fucking hate it.
This definitely wasn’t the big one, but hopefully lessons were learned, and we will be better prepared if and when the big one does come along.
I only know one guy who got it, he was in his seventies, had all the pre-existing conditions, intubated twice, he survived and is finally home with his family.
We had a few positive patients. Not sure how many, nor of their outcomes, but there have not been a lot of cases in our area, and few deaths. The health department, whose job it was to inform us, really sucked at passing along information. I blame bureaucrats who were frightened of hipaa, and apparently somewhat ignorant of hipaa.
We treated everyone as possibly infected, while trying to preserve PPE. By that I mean tried to get everyone to come outside, only had one of us make contact with the patient whenever possible.
We worked at least one code that I am certain would have gone to the ER hours earlier when her symptoms weren’t as serious if she wasn’t terrified of the Covid-19. Should be counted as collateral damage.
One of the other shifts had to make a body recovery of someone who probably would have gotten help, but stayed home and died, and wasn’t found for weeks. It was an absolute nightmare and they will probably need therapy.
I count myself incredibly lucky that I have a job I love, and work with people I consider friends, and got to get out of the house during this whole crisis. Indeed, my day to day life barely changed. I feel terrible for people who are isolated and out of work.
Don’t know if it’s covid related but:
I am honestly shocked im not hearing about these more often. I know a bunch of commercial gyms are closing in the area. Does anyone know where they sell off the equipment?
I would check with auction houses and see what they may have on deck. Bankruptcies and sell offs take a little time, and it could be good to keep your ear to the ground. A guy I worked for was networked pretty well with some in the tri- state area and got some freakin ridiculous deals on shop machinery among other things.
Another guy I know had an in with a school district, and when they did a closed bid auction of their entire high school gym he bought the whole thing for $600.00. Thousands of lbs. of plates, a couple thousand sqft. of rubber floor, the whole shebang.
I know that there are a few people on here in the area, so, there ya go!
I might call to see if they’re going to have a live auction. I wouldn’t mind getting a couple things if I can get them for a song & a dance. ![]()
My small hole in the wall gym has been back open for 2 months now. It’s a bummer to see how the covid rules are being flaunted, and how plain disrespectful people are… Sometimes intentionally making others uncomfortable because they believe it’s all a hoax. Basic common courtesy and respect would go a long way.
On the bright side, a number of folks in my industry that I work closely with are being brought back after they were furloughed in april. I’ve gotten used to “the new normal” where you wear masks inside and crowded public places, and flying with a mask was NBD too. I only know a handful of folks that got covid so far, and only 1 that had to be hospitalized (late 40s in shape guy), so I feel grateful.
The government just announced the new measures that are going to be in place in Italy to counteract the sharp increase in the spread of the virus.
Along with blablablah bars closing earlier lolwhocares, some people, myself included, were fearing gyms would be closed again.
Instead, they announced that, since the data they collected about rule enforcement in the gyms shows that most of them do in fact comply with the measures, they are giving gym owners a one-week “probation” period to fully comply and get things in order. Gyms’ closure will be decided upon at the end of next week conditional to this.
So fingers crossed… I don’t wanna end up having to do pushups on the balcony again.
You are about to learn a sad truth about the world…
Pushups on the balcony time?
Buy some elastic bands. I’ve bought mine from Decathlon - they’re surprisingly durable and cost less than 20 euros each.
I have a band already. Will probably purchase another pair, yes. Actually, I’m thinking of heading to Decathlon this week to get a pair of dumbbells or something… Gotta have something of a plan B just in case.
I’m not sure if the great kettlebell shortage ™ is still a thing, but when it comes to Decathlon stores chances are the heavier bells (24 and 32kg) will be in stock while the lighter ones are usually sold out.
I have five different bands from Decathlon, the heaviest (black) one is great for front squats and it’s a challenge to do band pushups with them.
I also have one of their pullup/dip stations. Very satisfied with it all things considered.
Thankfully, I do have an option for pullups and dips already.
I also have a 10 kg KB but honestly I still haven’t been able to find a use for it.
My idea was to buy a pair of 10-12 kg dumbbells (if I can find them) because those are what allow you to do stuff like raises, curls, extensions… Lateral raises and curls with a band just aren’t my thing. I tried, believe me, but I hate them.
Having a heavier pair of dumbbells would be cool for presses, but I would like not to spend a ton on this if I can.
I can tell you that 5s and 10s are hard to come by … and when they ARE available they’re being priced at about $10/lb … I’ll just keep duct taping my toddler to the bar
Rogue has stock.
I just fleshed out my KB lineup and got a full double set of tube bands.
I now have…
1x9lb
1x13lb
1x18lb
2x26lb
2x35lb
2x44lb
1x70lb
1x88lb
Double 44s are a good all-around weight for me but I’m tempted to double up on my 70 and 88 so I can really push my KB strict press and heavy ass swings.
I’ve also got a Texas power bar on the way to go with my squat rack I’m reclaiming to put in the space I’ve reclaimed from BJJ mats. Home gym is shaping up nicely for 2021.
Well since they were in stock at Rogue and since 2021 is a big question mark I went ahead and bought another 9lb, 2x53 and a second 70 pounder.
I blew this load of cash because kettlebells are the only thing I can put over my head while standing in my house. I also only have 305 lbs of plates, so heavy kb swings and RDL/SLDL will have to do in place of deads until I get more plates.
I’ll get a second 88 if 2x70 starts to feel light. Then I’m done buying kettlebells!
I have a great solution for this: Stop lifting for, oh, say, 2 years or so then start back up again. It’ll take you a while to use all of those plates. Trust me, the plan can’t fail!!
And you’re welcome.
I’m 3 years removed from serious and consistent lifting, so 305 will be plenty for me on squats and bench for awhile.
I’m just built for deads and 305 ain’t enough! Maybe I’ll play around with hooking kettlebells on the bar to get me to an appropriate load.
I now have that option!
There’s a tax opportunity in everything:
Some of us have been impacted more than others:
My bet is she has terrible breath and this is easier than confronting her or he finally got his “in”.on his strange kink.
