How Has Covid Affected You?

Maybe you should tell her this:

LOL.

I’m sure her security detail is staying busy enough right now. I hope they keep doing a good job.

Nobody I train jiu jitsu with would ever mangle an old lady, but that doesn’t change the fact that a lot of jiu jitsu people are very frustrated right now. It’s just a hobby for me, but it is the primary coping mechanism for quite a few people who managed to get their lives back on track by centering on training.

Not unlike weights.

I joke about it, but there are real human impacts to consider.

Isn’t there a movement right now to get her impeached? Just a rumor I heard.

I’m sure there is. I’d be shocked if there was not. I’ve not read anything about it though.

Seeing many #FUCKMILLS bumper stickers your way? Pretty common around here. Maybe that’s why she’s keeping us closed!

There are no “civilians” in Afghanistan. There are combatants and non-combatants. Nor is it relevant, as the liberal proposition is “women and children hardest hit”.

So, do tell, post the figures to prove this one smallish war (as opposed to all the others in the last 100 years) affected women were hardest hit and explain why that outweighs WWI, WWII (all casualties, world wide), Korea, Vietnam, and all the current crap going on.

(I’ll give you a hint: even in Afghanistan, it’s mainly men dying, so your search will be futile.)

I don’t disagree with you that women don’t suffer “more” in war, but would remind you that death is not the only outcome to be feared, and may be preferred over some of the others, e.g. being used as a camp whore by the men who killed your husband. Maybe your small child has been left behind and you don’t know how he/she fares. Or maybe it’s huddled in a corner while you service the enemy soldiers.

Again, I don’t claim women suffer more, but watching your child starve to death must be pretty devastating. I might rather be cleanly killed by a bullet.

The Japanese in China. Who suffered more? The Japanese soldiers or the estimated several million dead (perhaps well over 10 million) civilians among whom were victims of rape, mutilation, massacre, starvation, sex slavery, human experiments…

It seems like a lot of bad things can happen to women and children when all of the fighting men are killed or captured, doesn’t it?

Who has more choice? War is a choice. If we start saying that men suffer more in war than women and children, then we are saying that the Nazi troops suffered more than the people they massacred, forced into slave labor, tortured, etc. We are saying the Mongols who committed mass rape and massacred almost everyone in Baghdad, even after they had surrendered, suffered more than those they killed.

We could add in the sack of Rome by the troops of Charles V, whose “crimes” included auctioning off nuns to be raped.

At the hands of other fighting men. But men suffer more.

It’s not a liberal proposition, it’s fact of warfare from the invasion of the Sea Peoples, through Assyrians and Babylonians to modern times. The only outliers are imperial powers who have the luxury to wage wars in foreign lands and therefore their civilians are not getting killed so their casualties are skewed towards men.

One million dead civ… I mean noncombatants in the Soviet-Afghan war?

I know several afghantsy and when the mujaheeding were taking pot shots at them from surrounding hills they’d first get angry, then blind drunk and then they’d proceed to kill random kids tending sheep in the countryside.

It’s those young Viking men who are the real victims, not the civilians they put to the sword from Seville to Salerno.

I think the original point being made was that it’s people without agency who suffer most. This is true in most crises, including war.
If there’s a war, would you rather have a gun and combat skills, or be waiting around helplessly to see who wins? Better to have agency.
So if women and children generally have less agency than men, then in most adverse situations they will suffer more. This would hold true for war, pandemics, famines, whatever. It’s a generalisation but it seems pretty logical.

Or what did they did up and down the Volga.

The Turks depopulated an Irish town and sold all of the inhabitants into slavery.

Ah, the Turks. Even wondered how there aren’t any Arabs in Turkey despite the fact that they border Lebanon, Syria and Iraq? Their borders are clear cut, the only exception being the Kurds because they’re (at least in Turkey proper) too numerous to kill. And let’s not get into Ottoman rule in the Balkans…

Shut up with your even keeled, thoughtful, both sides-seeing response! It’s 2020 goddamnit… time to pick a side and to be a dick about it!

I feel like the Kurds are like the Poles of the Middle East- always searching for a state

What do folks think is most likely to happen to all that workout equipment that was purchased over the past few months now that people are starting to return to the gyms? I’m thinking maybe there should be some great prices on lightly-used dumbbells, KBs, plates … by year’s end …

I’d bet there’s going to be a big glut, both in the residential stuff and commercial.

Just a guess but unfortunately I think a lot of smaller gyms are going to have to pack it in.

I hope so … I need some 2.5s, 5s & 10s … fingers crossed someone will be selling a platform … that’d go great in my garage

At this point, i have fully adapted to the “new normal”. Really the only thing that changed is my hair, and i work from home now.

Even went for a ski with my fiance the other weekend:
