How Do You Recover After a PL Meet?

Barzeen, it’s not going to be 3 full power, the first one will be the Il State and I’ll do that full power, then the UPA midwest and I will just bench there, and then the final meet which will be my real focus which is the nationals.

Where do they hold the Il state meet. I would be interested in getting out there and watching that one.

I’d recommend taking the full week off, and then the next week ease back into it. I’ve came back right away the week after, as well as trying to go back hard after taking a week off, and that has not gone well.

I’ve been meaning to try to get in the first week after and just do some light, high rep, not to failure work to help with recovery, but it’s hard to get in there and stay light, especially if you just had a good meet. So I usually just do the whole week off. Another p’lifter I help/train does the same and likes taking the whole week off.

It’s going to be at Bolingbrook Highschool, you could probably get more information off of chicagopowerlifting.com

I’m usually pretty well recuperated after a meet. While a meet is typically 8 or 9 max or near-max lifts, the two or three weeks leading up to a meet are very restorative. No deadlifting for three weeks, no heavy squats for two, and no maximal benching for two weeks (I’ll still work up to a my bench opener a week out or a little heavier). So if a meet is on Saturday, by the following weekend, I’m going heavy again.
How many meets per year do you do with this gameplan? I just can’t figure out how I’m going to get stronger if I am basically shut down for the ~month around the meet???
I do 3 or 4 per year of which usually 2 or 3 are full meets and 1 or 2 are bench only or push pull.

wow, and I was worried about doing state and nationals so close together… maybe Caslow’s meet too… I think that the only way I’ll push that hard is if Worlds is really in florida this year and I can’t get out there for it…

It’s all about testing your limits, at least that’s the way I look at it. I will never know what I am capable of if I don’t try for it, and you should do the Caslow meet.

one full week off, then take a couple of weeks to get back into it.

I think this is probably the worse thing you can do.

In particular for a drug free lifter, you need to maintain your base level of strength. Taking this kind of time off tends to have a negative effect on that. Not to mention, compared to your peaking cycle the last week and the meet is basically a deload from a training volume standpoint.

We are back in the gym doing our normal routine, albeit very light starting the Monday after the meet.

We then move into another progressive cycle the following week.

I really think overall it is a big mistake to take any time off after a meet. The key is to ease back in but if you are intelligent about structuring your training cycles this takes care of itself, anyway.

For some reason I just read this. I laughed out loud.

No shit, dude. Except for the hangover the morning after I am feeling fine.

I always feel invigorated after a meet. Even if I am just helping. I want to get back in the gym on Monday. Want to train.

I’m going to mail in the entry tomorrow… it looks like I’ll be able to get a teammate out there to help me so game on…

Who’s going with you?
