Homemade Protein Bars

1/2 rolled oats
5 scoops natural on whey
1/4 flax seed
1/2 cup liquid egg wts
1 cup fiber one
8 tbs Smart Balance chunky pb

I baked them using a rice cooker. They came out well but they are not the least bit sweet. I glazed them with some organic local honey, just a dab.

What can I do to make these better next time? I’m satisfied with these, but I’d like them at least a little bit sweet…

Obviously you could try some of the artificial sweeteners – I’m partial to Splenda. I think Metabolic Drive tasted sweet to me – so you could try that in place of the whey. There are also some sugar-free coffee sweeteners – typically liquids (choc, vanilla, etc) – that you could try for different flavors.

Lastly you could try Almond butter instead of peanut butter. Some people think it tastes a little sweeter than peanut butter.

I figured the ON Whey had enough sweeteners in it to get the job done, but I guess the 1/2 cup of egg whites over powers it. I will try spenda next time. Almond butter is just to expensive for me. Maybe some almond extract or vanilla extract though…?

Thanks.

How about some blueberries or rasins. Try coconut oil. I read somewhere not to cook flazseed as it damages the omega3s.

I’ll try those. I wonder if using non-fat milk or butter milk would work?

I don’t think the milk is going to work in making the bars sweeter.

You’re best option is to use an artificial sweetener.

I have a few questions, however;

  1. Isn’t the Fiber supplement over-kill giving the Oats and Flaxseeds? (Did you visit the bathroom after consumption shortly after?)

  2. How did they taste with the Honey?

  3. Technically, won’t a Rice Cooker in comparison to the oven alter the taste completely? (ex; Chicken cooked in a rice-cooker instead of an oven.)

I’m living in a dorm, so the oven is out of the question. I can only have a rice cooker, slow cooker, etc in my room; no flames.

I tried again using wheat bran, cottage cheese, less egg whites and more splenda. They’re much sweeter but the consistency is off, they crumble. Kinda like playdough that’s left in the sun.
