I’m considering putting a gym in my house and ditching the commercial gym i go to. im curious who here has a home gym and what equipment you have. where did you get stuff and what r good places to get equip from.
Quite honestly, I think the best thing you can get for yourself is a dumbbell set and adjustable barbell set. If you need a machine, I’d get an all-purpose pulley machine that you can do lat pulldowns and seated rows with. However, if you want to go heavy with the squats, I suppose a cage is safe. How much room do you have? I just haven’t been impressed with too many home gyms.
the best home gym equipment I have ever used is power blocks, they work and feel like any other DB’s but take up about 2 feet.If I was building a home gym I would get them, a multi purpose bench w/a dip bar, and you can build a pretty good body. if I would add to it, I would add a power rack and an olympic set and install some type of chin bar. peace
power rack (bodysolid), plate mate pulley addon (bodysolid), adjustable bench, ol bar and weights. might get some bumper plates, and may invest in a reverse hyper.
I have a power rack and a 300 pound barbell set that does me real well. I also have adjustable dumbbells along witha flat bench that I can put a block under to change the incline/decline. Extra stuff I have is a heavy bag, a total gym which is ok, but I didnt buy it. I also have some big rocks to workout with caveman style and have made a sled out of an old tire. I dont have AC, its dirty but its a great change from the sterile environment of a YMCA. I can train barefoot or with my shirt off and go eat 30 seconds later. No traffic, no people, just you, your dogs roaming around, and your iron. From thios board I can see things are starting to change with fitness. Plus if you want to take a leak you just go around back and do it. I may never pay someone ebver again to workout. You have to want it. My fiance hates working out and would doit at a YMCA but she wont change plates, and get dirty like I am willing to do. Screw commercial gyms! Man was made to move weights, whatever they are. Not sit in a nice clean comfy machine and workout. Good luck.
Here’s what I have: Lifting cage, Dip stand, dipping belt, adjustable incline bench, chinning bar (if the cage doesn’t have one), plates, a straight bar, and dumbell handles. The only thing I’d like to add is a cable add-on for doing seated rows.
u meant want to also pick up a medicence ball for some abs and a change of pace, there are alot of workout on this website for it (ie swiss ball arm workout)
i meant to says swiss ball (not medicence ball)and one that can hold alot of weight and is burst proof…
I got lucky…I had alot of plates and bars lying around from my dad’s old gym, which he ran back in the 50’s. I decided to resurrect it this past year, and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Check around at gyms, used equipment places, Ebay, etc…alot of people give up on lifting, and are looking to ditch equipment. I bought my squat rack, power cage, and reverse hyper machine this way. I also built my own box for squats, put together some chain for some Westside exercises, and even stocked my garage with sandbags, kegs, wheelbarrow, etc. for some good finishing exercises. I now find myself getting far better exercises at home than I do at the commercial gym.
Cage, 700lbs of plates, olympic bar, thick bar, thick dumbell handle, dipping bars, platform, sandbag, grip tools. You don’t need bench. Dip. Real strength comes from standing on your own 2 feet and lifting a weight from floor to overhead. All this fits on a 4’x8’ platform (sheets of playwood and rubber) and 2 plate trees.

Powerblock adjustable dumbbells are really nice. Got mine at fitness warehouse.
you might also want to buy a keg or two. I don’;t have any, but as someone suggested earlier, for dino stuff you just fill them up with water. And for party stuff, load 'em up with beer.
2 olympic sets w/bars (traded a Cal Ripken rookie card for one), hex dumbells, bench with dipping station, power cage w/pull up bar (from a classified ad), swiss ball. I’d like some kettlebells and a medicine ball. And I dream of having a reverse hyper machine, ah well…
i definately want to have a renegade style gym in my garage. im definately thinking power rack with chinning bar.i have a 2 car garage for my stuff. i already have mats(jiujitsu) and bags(muay thai). i have to pick up a medicine ball and sandbags and a keg. i already made my sled. ebay is a good idea, im going to check there for the rack.im just tired of my gym. i do turkish get ups and they look at me like im an idiot, not that i really care but im just so much easier for the renegade style training.
I bought mine from IronMind. Great stuff! Well worth the price.
If you live on the east coast give me a call (203) 226 - 2200 or 1 (800) Gym Source. Hoist and Cybex make the best home equipment.

Allen, did you happen to purchase a home on Route 33 in Westport 10 or so years ago? I’m just wondering if perhaps we met. I sold my late godmother’s home to a young couple back then and the guy sold gym equipment. I believe 226 is a Westport prefix.
Bench, squat rack, barbell set, dumbbell set (power block), kettlebell, chin-up bar, swiss ball, jump rope, medicine ball.
Definitely don’t leave out the chinning/pullup and dip capability. Make sure there will be room to hang plates from your waist as you advance. You can make or buy a dipping belt. I made one from an old leather belt, some light chain, and rivets.
I did not purchase a house on rt 33, but my store is on the Post rd. right off of rt 33 in Westport. Stop by some time. I train at Fitness Edge (or my store sometimes). Which gym do you train at? I look forward to meeting you.
