Hitting the Road on Friday

Here’s a closer view of the front. I’ve made some improvements since these pics were taken. I’ve added a “front porch” made from an old plastic skid - just something to wipe my boots on, and I’ve picked up most of the trash and dug a fire pit. I want to get one of those tri-pods so I can hang my dutch oven from it, but alas, with my busy work schedule my “home cooked meals” are what I can fry quickly in the pan over the propane camp stove.

Alligator tail?

Here’s a pic of the side of my castle, in all it’s “open-soffit” glory! And when I say open soffit, I mean OPEN! When I initially arrived the door was locked and my friend couldn’t find the key so I actually CLIMBED over the wall and under the roof and was able to unlock it!

The pink board you see in the previous pics is so I can insulate the ceiling a little to keep some heat in - it’s getting down in the 30’s the last few nights. Luckily I have a Zero degree rated sleeping bag. It’s a mummy bag, so I slip a mosquito net over my head, pull the draw string down tight and I’m nice and snug and safe from the bugs - the first night there with out the net, I was woken several times by bugs flying and landing on my face, not fun!

Well boys and girls, break out the champagne, cuz PAPA GOT A JOB!!!

Seriously - I am so fucking relieved right now!

I went to Office Depot this morning, printed out 20 copies of my resume, the third door I knocked on hired me on the spot. They sent me out for my physical and piss test around noon and I was drilling holes in a stainless steel control panel by four. It’s a small electrical controls company that does a lot of service work as well as rotational shift work.

So it looks like I’ll be staying in Lafayette for a while.

FUCKIN’ A!!!
Well that was easy! We’ll put the beer “on ice”.
We’ll have that beer soon, bro!
No doubt. I drive through your new town a couple times a year to visit amigos in Baton Rouge, it’ll be easy to tack a day. If you haven’t yet, try some boudain and cracklins.

Congrats, man!

I actually had some boudain and cracklins for dinner today! I was finishing up the cracklins as I was updating this thread. DELICIOUS!

Boudain is ground pork mixed with rice. It’s served in a variety of ways. Tonight I had it served up two ways: as a pistolette (kind of a deep fried boudain sandwich) and two boudain balls (three inch diameter “ball” of boudain, breaded and fried). Cracklins are fried pig skin/fat seasoned with DELICIOUSNESS…

Yeah, it’s a heart attack on a plate, but it’s cheap, low carb and fucking GOOD. I’ll take a picture next time I have it.

Here’s a pic of the inside the day I moved in after the initial cleaning. I’ve since rearranged everything and bought some plastic shelves and moved the table to the back.

LMAO - everyone calls one of the pipe-fitters I work with, “Wildman”. The guy is a character right out of a movie! He and a few others are supposed to come over to the place so we can do a little fishin’ and drinkin’ later this week (pics of the pond to follow). We’re having a big bonfire for NYE. LOL

I upgraded to a propane lantern the other day - that kerosene thing just wasn’t cutting it! I just use it now for trips to the latrine (yes, I dug a hole 50 yards away and I shit in it - baby wipes are my friend!).

Yeah buddy, you livin’ now. And in the spring time you gonna see some of the best surf fishin’ n crabbin’ you ever saw too. Better than chesapeake!

Eat yourself some gulf shrimp when you can, prepared any way but gumbo is good ftr. Or flat fried.

Here’s a few more pics of the property - It’s quite pretty. Nice and peaceful and secluded.

Love the little pics AC, sounds peaceful. At least with a little house it doesn’t take long to clean. lol

Fire pit will be nice too, stay warm AC.

Have you had any ladies back to the castle yet?

Oh and YES PLEASE to the food porn.
HoustonGuy wrote:

I landed a pretty sweet deal: an offshore motor control/electric company (I have a very strong background in motor controls - you saw my resume, I was a foreman for a motor control company for a while) that will send me offshore for both service and new construction and will let me work in their fabrication shop building “skids” as much as I want while I’m on shore… I can go home pretty much whenever I want - I just have to let them know. They are paying me VERY well…

After typing all that, I have to say I think I’m good for now. I’ll do this for at least six months or a year so that I can put “offshore experience” on my resume and then try and find a more permanent rotational position with one of the larger drilling companies.

Obviously, if I got a FAR better rotational (28/28) offer, I’d take it - but for just starting out in the industry, I think I’m pretty fucking lucky to have landed the gig that I did. I’m sure I’ll be looking to move to a bigger company sooner or later, but this is perfect spot to “get my feet wet”. I really appreciate the help and advice you gave me, though.

Well, for some reason my phone isn’t emailing the pics so that I can upload them. So pics of the pond and the promised wildlife (sorry IH) will have to wait until next time I get online. Should be in a few days. It’s almost eleven, so I gotta drive back and climb in my sleeping bag - gotta get up for work.

See you guys in a few days.

Yeah man, Lafyette is full of character too. I’m stoked for you. Keep an Abita cold for me, good sir. And if you see the ghost of pirate Jean Lafitte, follow him to his gold! Rumor has it he’ll lead you down Galveston way and we can booze sooner than later.
