I was actually thinking of just sending him a bit of money, but I doubt he’d take it, and he seems to be making plenty of that now…

I’m actually pretty well set financially. The MAIN reason for doing this was to get a decent INCOME stream again. I have decent assets, both liquid and real property (and other art and stuff). To fully “bare all”, my main issue is that my grandmother is in an assisted living home and her money ran out about two years ago. I am pretty much the only person in my family with the ability (or inclination) to pay for it. So when I had to stop doing mortgage, I was dipping into my savings at a rate that was just unsustainable with the income I was earning while bartending. I have rental property that generates enough income to cover the mortgages on my home, but between the nursing home and all the rest of life’s expenses, I was blowing through it pretty fast. So now I’m earning enough to where it’s just about even.

So why don’t I just put here in a cheaper home? Because I love her and I want her final days to be as comfortable and familiar as possible. I honestly believe that she is the only woman who ever loved me unconditionally, and she faithfully wrote me a short letter EVERY WEEK that I was in prison. Those letters carried me through some tough times, so I take my obligation to her very seriously. I could go on and on about how awesome a person she is and the accomplishments she had during her life, but suffice it to say, they broke the mold when they made her.

This is the place where I’ve been working. I can feel my balls dropping lower every time I walk in that place! LOL It’s got EVERY TOOL imaginable! An entire WALL dedicated to machine screws, nuts, washers and other hardware… I’m catching a woody just thinking about all the cool stuff I could build there!
My ‘model jet turbine powered street luge’ that I’ve been dreaming of for over 10 years would take only a few days to fabricate in a place like that.

Sorry if it’s been mentioned earlier, but what role do you do in the place. Electrician?

BBB
You guessed it! It’s a small controls company. So basically you need a whole separate “system” of pneumatic and electric/electronic wires and devices to provide data, status, start/stop/run control, pressure/safety, high/low limit, etc… for the tanks, engines, pumps, generators, fans and other “big” equipment on the rig (or any ‘industrial’ facility).

My job description is two-fold: on new construction (in the facility pictured) I wire the devices, control panels, PLC interface and grounding/bonding of all of the equipment on the skids (pre-fabricated pump/motor stations to be delivered and installed on an oil platform). The other component is service - on existing rigs, when a component in one of the the control systems breaks down, they’ll fly me out to the rig to troubleshoot it and fix it (a process that can take minutes, hours or even days).

Before I did mortgage I was a pretty well qualified electrician. I was actually a foreman for a motor controls company for several years before I became a foreman in the technical services division of one of DC’s largest electrical contractors - pretty much if it had three letters in it, I worked on it (VFD, PLC, MCC, ATS, PDU, UPS, etc…). So I’m very well qualified for the job and it’s pretty much a perfect “fit”.

AC: Apologies, I have literally only just discovered this thread! I am far too late to wish you good luck as I would have liked to from the offset (not that you needed it) so belated congratulations on your success!

I’ll be sure to keep up with the rest of the journey

Best wishes for a happy, prosperous and exciting new year my friend :-)
Thanks, brother! Same to you!

What kind of things to you hear at night?

Anything scary? 0_0
Aside from the pack of wild coyotes and my neighbor shooting at them? Everything else is pretty tame compared to that.

I hear the occasional animal rooting around, but I always carry a lantern or am wearing a headlamp, so they stay away.
I got an APP (dog) for that

How are you dealing with being kind of cut off(tv, comp, etc, do you get cell reception out there?) now that you’ve been there awhile?
I get cell reception. Being ‘cut off’ is kinda liberating in a way. Y’all know I used to stop by here every day, so I DO miss my “'Nation time”, but there’s a lot to be said for taking a developmental detour and simplifying for a while. The new job takes a lot of time and energy, so I really only have a few hours of “free time” that is usually spent dealing with things I used to take for granted but that now require time and effort to achieve.

I’m gonna “rough it” for a while, I think. I’m learning a lot and I’m able to focus on some of my “evolutionary activities” without distraction.
I’m mostly jealous of the fact that you don’t have some douchebag with a subwoofer living in the apt below who plays fricken top 40 dance music. 0_o

But yes it would be nice to take a vacation from the electronics. Books, books, books!

It’s like recharging.

Hey Ya’ll I talked to AC and he would like to let you know that he’s received your PM’s but he’s been working 90+ hours this week and tomorrow morning he’s off to work on a rig so he will be out of reach for a couple of weeks. He says “PAPAS GOTTA WORK” so that’s exactly what he’s doing.

He says thanks for all the well wishes and he will try and return your PM’s when he gets back to shore!!!

God what a hero and fucking inspirational guy. Best to you and keep up the good work man!

Just got off the phone with Brad and he wanted me to post an update for you guys.

He’s doing well. Been on the rig since last Saturday and he gets off the 20th. He’ll return home on the 23rd and we’re trying to do another meet-up in the DC area that week (460 calling 460).

He says being on the rig is a bit like prison without the gay sex  LOL You’re captive and in close quarters. He’s working 12 hours shifts and he tells me they feed the crew like kings…chef and all. Tonite was baby back ribs. Motherfucker ate better than I did. LOL

He appreciates all your well wishes. He will not have internet access until he gets back on dry land.

The above is why your posts get read by so many people. The above is what makes up a large part of your being a true man (the commitment to her part).

Apparently she wrote you every week because she saw something in you (at least I read it that way).

Your stock is rising. Thanks for sharing.
