I found this site researching for my thyroid problem and have been learning every day, thank you. Great information here. My wife convinced me to have my thyroid and testosterone checked because of my lack of interest in sex and just being a pain in the ass to be around (sometimes)
My GP ran what was labeled Comprehensive metabolism tests which I can post later.
-age 55
-height 6’
-waist 34
-weight 185
-describe body and facial hair Some on chest, full beard
-describe where you carry fat and how changed. Allways a little extra on belly
-health conditions, symptoms. Thought I was healthy. My Dr. took me off his patient list because I hadn’t been there for so long
-Rx and OTC drugs, Until now just Flonase
any hair loss drugs or prostate drugs ever No.
-describe diet. Lots of proteins and carbs
-describe training- Haven’t been doing any training for a few years, used to do a little weight training,. stopped when I started working 12-14hr days.
-testes ache, ever, with a fever? No.
-how have morning wood and nocturnal erections changed Were very infrequent but are more frequent now
2/2013
The test results that really stuck out were the TSH and TT.
TSH 26.8 (.34-5.6) No T3 or T4 tests were done
TT 249 (241-827)
Only additional labs/tests done that are recommended on the sticky to do before starting TRT were:
PSA .84
DRE -ok
started taking 25MCG of Levothyroxine
5/2013
TSH .5 (.34-5.6)
Kept taking 25MCG of Levothyroxine
7/2013
TSH 13.9 (.34-5.6)
TT 369 (241-827)
started taking 75MCG of Levothyroxine
10/2013
TSH 4.4 (.34-5.6)
TT ? His nurse didn’t want to test, said my insurance wouldn’t pay for it. Found out later she was incorrect. I do feel better than before, more sex drive and less cranky.
I became impatient and started taking (For 2 weeks) the androgel he prescribed back in February. I think now that was a mistake and have stopped taking it for now.
Does this seem logical:
Keep taking same dose of Levothyroxine
more research into iodine.
Find a different Dr.
have more tests done (per sticky)
Wait on the TRT till I get TSH controlled, T may fix itself.
Hello my friend.i am also 54. The testing is an excellent barometer to get a picture of your endocrine system. you mentioned having to $pay for your testosterone test.Im from Toronto, canada and we have socialized medicine, but they only $pay for Total testosterone. The more relevant is Bio-Available test. This tells you out of a Pool:How much is actually effective, similar to the liver, when we take an oral steroid,or Tylenol.Only a bit is actually chemically effective.Im no expert, but many men have low Test, but look more into the thyroid,as that’s a more immediate concern. all the best john

Have you ever asked your doc about dessicated thyroid like armour or nature-throid (just to name a few)? Many people feel much better when they do that. It gives you all the thyroid hormones instead of just t4. Not all of us can convert t4 to t3 very well, which is the active thryoid hormone. Go to stopthethyroidmadess to look up more info.
Also, be very careful about iodine usage. Make sure you’re actually deficient before taking it. I took it and my TSH score went up instead of down. Going by temperature alone isnt necessarily a great idea.
I would get a full thryoid panel if I were you. TSH, fT4, fT3, rT3, and antibodies.

Thank you I will look into that. I think my insurance will pay for the tests I need.

Really appreciate the advice. I’ve ordered her book and another one. So far the T4 medicine seems to be working ok.
