High School Powerlifter

Especially for your first full meet, that is very good. And you are only 16, you are on track to get very far in this sport. Congratulations.

What about IPF points? You must be 1st or 2nd place on those!

I couldn’t find a list with IPF points. As far as I know, the OPA posts top 10 lists annually for the best performances of the year. IPF points are too new I guess

Awesome work man! What a huge total! Dude, that 430 squat at your size is no joke, regardless of age. And your bench press will catch up with everything else in time. Loved every bit of this write-up. It actually sounds like it went almost exactly like my first meet did. I also went 9/9, and felt like I left a little on the table on each lift, particularly my squat. My goal at that time was an elite total, and I ended up getting it by like 6 lbs or something. Don’t remember exactly.

What you said about everyone being supportive, finding your rhythm after the first squat attempt, all those things really resonated with me. Those are the things that keep me coming back. I’ve competed in strongman like 20 times at this point, and I still get all those feels every single time I compete. I absolutely LIVE for those moments of anxiety followed by performance. Nothing beats it. That’s really the best part about this, you learned how well you can thrive under pressure, and perform beyond expectations. Not everyone has the quality in them. Some people shrink under the bright lights, others shine. Glad to see you’re in the latter group.

I really appreciate the support. Thank you so much!

I surprised myself a few times Saturday, my ability to perform under pressure was one of those great surprises

So what’s the plan moving forward? When is the next meet?

I think you should focus on hypertrophy for the next couple months. Aim to gain about 1/2lb per week, not too much or you will gain too much fat. You seem to do well with high reps and your technique is solid so you can go ahead with something like that. If you need some advice just let me know.

I’m going away until early August starting in late June, so I think I’m going to have some fun in the gym and not follow a strict program. Starting a long term program when I only have 8 weeks till a 6ish week long break seems a little silly. I do have a few non-powerlifting related gym goals I was thinking about reaching for in this time.
1: around 35 bodyweight chin-ups for a school record
2: 500lbs+ trap bar deadlift
3: 135lbs strict curl for a school record
4: maybe break my school leg press record, but I haven’t leg pressed in ages so idk how that’ll go
5: build up some basic cardio, nothing crazy, maybe with supersets and higher reps (could be helpful for hypertrophy). I feel like I get out of breath more easily since gaining a fair amount of weight for prep after almost a year of maintenance.

I might take a stab at a 440lbs squat after a deload week or something, I guess I’d still sort of be peaked because of doing lower reps recently. Also, I am super excited to see how far I can push my trap bar deadlift in the next little while. For the first little while after the meet, I’ll probably not push food too hard, but then towards the time I go away, I’ll start upping the calories again, so I don’t lose my ability to do high reps and cardio and stuff. For part of the summer I’m going to be a canoe trip guide and I don’t wanna be too slow

Don’t take it as me trying to stop you from living your life, but if you were to stay focused on PL for the next 5-10 years you could be at the top of this sport.

I truly, truly appreciate it, and if you really think that, I’m gonna start going all gung ho with powerlifting. What program should I start next? 5/3/1? my main concern is lack of time before going away for the summer.
Ideally my plan for my next 3 meets would be as follows:
CPU Central Canadian championship (late august)
OPA junior/subjunior provincials (late october)
CPU nationals (early march) (I need to do the first 2 in order to be allowed to nationals)
I’m not sure if id be able to do all of this because it is alot of traveling and I’m not sure what my parents would think. If i did central Canadians, I’d need to have a pretty short prep. Lucky for me, as long as I don’t bomb out, I’m fine because don’t need to hit a qualifying total again after surpassing it at my meet on Saturday.

Do you think it’s even worth doing those higher level comps? I guess that’ll really force me to learn how to perform under pressure. If you don’t think it’s worth it, or my parents don;t want me to travel so much, maybe I’ll just stick to local meets for the time being.

Are you sure about that?

Right now it doesn’t really matter. You could just stick to local meets for now. Competing at nationals or whatever doesn’t really mean anything, but winning nationals would. Just focus on getting better.

You know I don’t care for the IPF, but don’t only have to compete in CPU/OPA meets. CPF and EPC have meets in Ontario, some around Toronto. Just aim to compete at least once or twice a year, and preferably at the most convenient time. Outside of that, get bigger and stronger.

not certain, but I’m pretty sure. Either way, I think a 1000lbs total (that’s what’s needed to qualify at nationals as an 83) shouldn’t be too hard

It might make sense to stick with local meets then. at 2019 nationals, a 557.5 total won in 74, and a 615 won in 83. Considering I’m one sip of water away from being an 83, winning nationals with anything over 600 seems pretty far away

Also, on a different note, is there any reason I should look into buying wrist wraps? My singlet’s recommended bodyweight limit is 160lbs, so I’ll need a new one soon. I was thinking if I were to get wrist wraps, that would be the time to do so, because I wouldn’t need to pay shipping twice. I have a cheap pair of wrist wraps I’ve almost never used (not comp approved). Maybe I’ll try them out and if I like them, I’ll get a more substantial pair

Strong lifting in here, I didn’t even know this log existed. Great work, and nice meet. Your squat is something else.

If you feel no need for them then it probably doesn’t matter much, but in my case I find that low bar squat and heavy benches are hard on my wrists. I cant think of any elite level lifter that doesn’t use them either. Mike T was all about not using wrist wraps at one time but all of a sudden his wrists started hurting and he started using them.

It wouldn’t hurt to have an approved pair available, if it’s in your budget then go ahead.

First workout back after comp today. Nothing too hard. I didn’t have much time to workout in gym class because of a shortened period so I did giant sets. Kept everything very light

3 rounds giant set 1:
Bench press: 135lbs x5
Chin-up: bodyweight x15
Hanging leg raise: 12 reps

3 rounds giant set 2:
Overhead press: 65lbs x8
Skullcrusher: 25lbs x12
Dumbbell curl: 25lbs x12

3 rounds giant set 3:
Barbell shrug: 225lbs x12
Preacher curl: 70lbs x8
Plank: 1 minute

Side note: I realized I was wrong about top 10 wilks by total in Ontario compared to 2018. But, according to openpowerlifting.com I’m ranked 29th by wilks in the 16-17 age range across all Canadian feds (sleeves). That’s a lot of specifications, but I’m happy with it lol.

I also got 12th out of 39 people by wilks in my meet

Thank you!!

First squat and deadlift session since the meet. No belt, no sleeves

Superset, 3 rounds
Squat: 225lbs 5 reps
Dead hang: 30 seconds
I figure building up my grip strength a little in an ā€œoffseasonā€ could help me later, I don’t think I have very good grip strength at the moment. This is also part of why I’m doing double overhand shrugs

Deadlift: 3x5@225lbs
super easy

Trap bar deadlift: 3x5 315lbs, 275lbs, 225lbs

3x20 chin-ups for fun

Not too difficult, my pr is 25 reps. I think I could get at least 30. For gym class I’m going to need to test that soon, along with a beep test and 115 x max reps bench
