Hey, Newbies. Here's What to Do

Why else would we have a reason to talk to each other?

On a serious note, I’ve never read “Beyond Brawn” and just ordered it since some respected posters recommended it.

Keeping a newbie mindset is a good thing.

I’d read “Brawn” to start with. I found it a bit more digestable than “Beyond Brawn”. The latter spent a LOT of time rallying against drug use and the effects of genetics, which ARE valuable talking points…but at one point it’s like “enough already”

Newbies- discipline in eating (getting at 1g protein per # ) should not be your concern yet.

Learn to train, learn to enjoy training.

Eat to keep enjoying training!!!

Once you do, you will figure out optimal eating.

Most quit by not following above.

Just get started and learn as you go; you don’t need to have it all figured out before you pick up a weight.

Work with a professional. A coach can correct your technique immediately, help you milk an exercise for all its worth, and get your progress to skyrocket. Once you become proficient, learn from someone else. See how different approaches work for you.

I’ve heard Ronnie’s interviews and I remember reading back in 1999 FLEX mag Ronnie mentioned his first back issue in an injury article.

First, there are people who lifted heavier routinely and didn’t end up like him. Ronnie’s heaviest lifts are 800 squat and dead.

I always take FLEX articles and such with a grain of salt, but I found it interesting Ronnie saying in his interview that after ge heard a pop in his back he finished lifting, didnt feel better an hour after his workout and immediately went to the hospital.

Much of his crippling issues are from continuing surgeries plus I believe he even had a botched surgery.

I really do suspect that he jumped the gun on surgeries to continue lifting as quickly as possible and maybe the surgeons are to blame too. So I think its more so from the surgeries not lifting.

He wasn’t a wrestler or a competitive Olympic lifter or doing other athletics at that time.

set weekly and monthly process goals, not outcome goals.

Thats a big one.

Its one thing to meet ones own expectations, but can be a whole other ball game to meet someone elses.

Great point. I also think positive reinforcement is really helpful with certain personality types. Some lifters seem to thrive (and increase adherence) when they have someone there to say, “Well done.”

Do something physical you enjoy. Enjoyment invites consistency and adequate effort.

Eat whole foods

Keep a consistent sleep schedule in line with being a diurnal creature

Be active outside of training sessions.

Get sunlight, avoid blue light

Run a simple program that teaches you the basics of how to train and do the big lifts safely. Starting Strength, Greyskull LP, etc. Not a bad idea to work with a trainer here.

Eat to your goals.

Don’t skimp on stretching and mobility work.

Cardio, do some. The second part of that word is vascular and having a strong heart isn’t a bad thing.

Keep showing up and punching the clock.

Same here… great book. But he did focus too much on those points. He definitely came across as bitter on those point’s.

There’s no secret. Workout CONSISTENTLY for YEARS. Push yourself hard, progress over time and track it. Eat to support your goals. The how matters less, focus on what you’ll actually do. Don’t get lost in the minutiae. Find a mentor.

Ok I cheated using a few contractions to get to 40 words. This being Tnation of course most of us think lifting to get bigger stronger, and I do too, however I think this also applies to many other modalities, running, biking, etc…

Lee Haney said it best for me…

“Stick with the basics…A, B & C, never rewrite the book”.

Dont get caught up in the minutiae, keep it KISS and enjoy the process.
