Help with Metal Genres?

Rocked out to MW for my whole workout. I’m down. It made the list for sure.

Well, if you’re looking at the metalcore genre, can’t go wrong with Trivium

This is metalcore and djent. @unreal24278 do you know this band? Watch at least half before you pass judgment lol

yea I know them, they also incorporate (or used to, not sure if they still do) elements of death metal

Trivium is good, however they aren’t metal core anymore, they’re now progressive metal (and they’re amazing too) ever check out the sin and the sentence

Like the OP, I actually know little on distinguishing sub genres of metal. Lol.

Yep, have all their albums actually. And yeah, you can tell their sound has changed compared to the first few albums. Wouldn’t say it’s bad, I actually love most of their albums, they’re just different now. If the newer ones are prog metal, maybe I should look up more prog metal bands. Any suggestions where to start?

I don’t listen to a lot of prog

New albums of born of osiris are what one could call prog metal/metalcore

Opeth I guess WAS progressive death metal

Meshuggah, gojira. I don’t listen to em but I know them

As I lay dying, in flames, demon hunter, Angel vivaldi (guitar only but the guy is a wizard), twelve foot ninja, devildriver, machine head.

Anybody here listens to Black metal/Death metal and has some nice stuff for me? Preferably recent stuff

As a big fan of both Toto and metal, this couldn’t appeal to me any more if it tried:

These videos and songs aren’t for everyone. The last one (cattle decap) I didn’t put the music video in because it’s quite graphic and was worried I’d get into trouble.

The behemoth vid is a little on the graphic side so tread carefully if easily offended or dislike graphic violence.

Btw toxic holocaust is black metal

Crossed with thrash (video has some potentially offensive imagery to some)

I saw Cattle Decapitation live two years ago at a Metal Blade Records Anniversary show in Manhattan. Crazy stuff!

Just going to jump in and name a few bands that I’ve been listening to recently and give an idea of what “genre” they are

Mastodon- newer stuff is more popcentric but the old stuff is way more stoner/thrash-ish type

Misery Signals- pretty basic metalcore but they write absolutely amazing songs. Newest album was outstanding

He is Legend- earlier stuff was kind of southern metalcore, new stuff heavy as fuck.

Job for a Cowboy- deathcore, the album Doom may be my favorite metal album of all time

The Contortionist- Exoplanet was death/prog and one of my favorite albums. Newer stuff is great but probably not what you’re looking for

Every time I Die- gritty and nasty.

The Black Dahlia Mirder- straight up death metal. Brutal lyrics/vocals. The drums pump me up like crazy.

As blood Runs Black- another deathcore act, great instrumentation and the vocals on the first album were badass

The Faceless- recently more prog/death but they used to be a little more deathcentric. Again, fucking brutal instrumentation

Glass Cloud- prog/core act. The royal thousand was an amazing album. Great vocals, great songwriting.

The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza- Danza IIII is by far one of the most crushing albums I’ve ever heard in my life

Veil of Maya- first few albums we’re my favorites, might not be your thing but their more recent 2 albums are a bit more diverse in the vocal department and are pretty brutal.

I could go on for days. Let me know if you want/need more

Thanks! But yeah I’m pretty sure everybody who’s into extreme stuff knows about Behemoth, Rotting Christ, Watain, Deicide… But I didn’t know the others I’ll check that out!

So you want underground esque bands no one knows about?

Cursed
Cursed - Model Home Invasion - YouTube (crust punk/sludge)

The secret (black metal/grindcore)

Parasite Inc (mellodeath)

High on fire (idk what this is but it’s trippy and cool)

Ingested (??? Sounds like deathcore/death metal, fairly brutal I guess)

Varg (??? Pagan metal/mellodeath/black/unsure)

Betzefer (thrash)

Salem (black/death/doom metal) I’m Jewish and this is a Jewish band so woooooooot, black metal that isn’t anti Semitic yay. Although I don’t think TH is anti Semitic.

Thank you, it will goes nicely for my chest session today. Underground is where the good stuff is nowadays. Plus when you’ve listened to this for 15 years you most likely listened to all of the classics

I’m Jewish too and WAS for a long time a metal fan. Not so much now. I sometimes felt torn because many talented musicians were and are anti-Semitic. Rob Fudali (Graveland) and Varg Vikernes (Burzum) have made some breathtaking music but unfortunately they are anti-Semitic.

I understand that point of view but honestly I do not care anymore and just enjoy the art. I went to see Orphaned Land yet I’m not jewish. I enjoy M8l8th yet I’m not a nazi. And I could cite a band that I listen to for every religion, race, opinion… L’art pour l’art doesn’t exist anyway.

Varg is also a psychopath, white supremacist and hates any form of religion besides the ideologies of paganism.

Did you ever watch the film lords of Chaos, it’s not entirely true to the story but it’s still very good, funny thing is, the character of Varg was a Jewish actor.

It’s a biography/take on mayhem btw

NAAAAAZZZZZZIIIIII

Just kidding

hey I noticed that MW had some anti-religious stuff. Not that I care, I just saw that you said it specifically didn’t.
