Help w/ Program for Dad

While I’m not over 35, I recently got my dad a gym membership for Christmas. He’s been wanting to lift for a while now so I don’t want to start him off on some ridiculous program. I figure I’ll start him on starting strength. I don’t want to scare him off so quickly. Also if there’s any precautions I should take that would be good. Thanks. (I’m figuring this is the right place to ask this question)

How old’s your Dad? Has he been in sports or is active at all? Overweight, underweight? Notable health issues?

The gym in your avatar - is that where you and he are going?

Yes, that’s the gym. I probably shoulda added he’s 46 and he has an active job (not lifting but a lot of walking) and he used to play baseball when he was in college and HS, not exactly overweight more like construction worker build I want to say.

A good gift indeed. Does your father have a particular interest related to weightlifting, or is he just looking to improve his general fitness?

And no matter what program you settle upon for him, he should consult with his physician prior to starting it.

Start him off gradually on whatever programme you are using. If it works for you it will work for him. A good programme is a good programme.

We old people aren’t a different species you know.

Sounds like a good idea. Nothing bonds faster than being training partners.
