Did about 20 sets of speed pulls for singles with 225 and 100lbs of band tension. In between each set, I did a set of three concentric only jumps of different variations.
Took a 15 minute ice bath last night and feel like a million bucks today. More later.
I’ll start by saying that maybe I’m just ignorant (haven’t been around lifting too long), but it seems your workouts, your recovery methods, all that, is just SUPER unique. No other training log that I read consistently has a training style similar to yours.
Do a lot of other PL’er you know train like this, or are kind of an outlier in that regard? I just never see people include jumps and sprints and so many workouts per week. How did you find out these tactics worked for you as opposed to what others would called more ‘traditional’ methods?
The more ‘traditional’ methods got me stronger. They also got me hurt all the time. I used linear periodization all through about 10 years of football. I made steady progress throughout the years but in college everything slowed down. My bench, squat, and powerclean stayed the same for 3 years. My last 2 years (got redshirted my freshman year) I started learning everything I could about westside, conjugate training, and just any kind of alternative training methods that weren’t NSCA certified.
My training now is a combination of a lot of things but the principles are pretty simple:
-Max Efforts
-Speed Work
-Jump
-Sprint
-Eat clean
-Don’t be a dumbass (this is the most important one)
I know Phil Harrington and a couple other Westside guys do tons of jump training and extra workouts. I remember reading a while back that Bennidict Magnussen will take a week or 2 off and do nothing but jumps and sprint work. A ton of lifters back in the day would sprint often. Other than that, I really don’t know if anyone trains exactly like I do.
Awesome job, the nope made me laugh my ass off. Back to work.
Tuesday-3-6-12- PM Stuff-
100 Push ups w/slingshot
50 Lying Leg Raises
50 SL Sit-Ups

Thanks for the lengthy response. The sprints and jumps are something I neglect, but will start incorporating if you feel they are worthwhile. Would probably help anyways considering I play basketball so often, allow me to be semi-athletic.
Great job at the Arnold, BTW. No idea how you didn’t get the 832, looked like it was going to go up pretty easy. Probably due to the weight drop / suit issue though. Probably would have gotten had your monstrous quads not gotten in the way as well. lol

No problem, and yes, jumps and sprints make a huge and, more importantly, immediate, difference in your lifts.
My lockout has always been my weakpoint in my deadlift. I’ve already got a plan together of ways to fix that. I need to talk to some other strong people and see what they think I should do as well.
AHh I am late to the post-deadlifting awesome-ness partay.
Good job!
I was telling people at school about this.
Err, but they thought a deadlift was a bench press, so I don’t think they really “got it”.

Ha! Yea, that sounds about right. Most people I explain powerlifting too make a poor clean and jerk motion with their hands then tell me good job.

Tri Opener

One of the strength coaching on my college football team, keeps asking me how powerlifting is going. I always say awesome and he usually asks something along the lines of how my snatch is coming along. There was also a folder on the gym computer labelled ‘powerlifting’ I opened it up and its videos of a bunch of guys on the team doing hang cleans… Hes a Phd candidate and I don’t have the heart to tell him how wrong he is. I did retitle the folder to olympic lifting tho haha

Jesus. That story made me sadder than I could ever describe.
Wednesday- 3-6-12- PM Stuff
Got into a box jump challenge… with one of my 12 year old football players. Here is how it went
Started at 30 inches, we each nailed it.
36x1
38x1
43x1
46.5<~~~ he smoked it. I landed it but it wasn’t pretty. Not an all time PR but pretty good for 4 days after a max deadlift.
49.5<~~~ he landed it but couldn’t stand up… pretty good for 12 years old… Jesus.
Prowler-
40 yard trips- 270lbs- 6 sprints in 12 minutes. This sucked.
Backoading with a gallon of gatorade and about 10 cokes.
Sqwatzzzz tomorrow.
Have been reading this log for a long time. Extremely inspiring. As an aspiring British powerlifter, it drives me on to heavier and heavier weights. Thank you.
