Hedlesky's How to Get Fat and Strong

Jesus, I suck at keeping this log updated.

Did some stuff, with weights and stuff. Bench is going up nicely. Squat and DL are non existant due to, what I can only guess is either an alien baby in my hip or AIDS. MRI tomorrow.

I have already talked to one awful doctor. Hopefully I won’t want to kill and eat the next one.

Sucks that your hip/hammie is messed up. Any word on what it might be, or any symptoms that seem to be out of place? Hope you heal up quickly man. You’re strong as hell.

So far, it could be one of three things:

  1. An avulsion on my ischial tuberalis (biceps femoris flexed so hard it broke my hip)
  2. A very high bicep femoris tear
  3. Some sort of impinged or completely compressed nerve in my lumbar somewhere.

I find out for sure June 1st. The doctor I am seeing is a fucking idiot though so I don’t know if he is going to be helpful. I want to get some PRP therapy or some other cool prolotherapy.

Thursday-5-26-11- ME Lower

Box Jumps- 38inchesx4x2<~~~ this is only 2 inches lower than my max and I was clearing it by about 10 inches. Should be interesting when I retest

Rev. Band DLs- Green- Not suit or belt- worked up to 765 for a very easy single. This is a 10lb PR but I am a shitload stronger than the last time I maxed on this. Probably had well over 800 but didnt want to push it.

Rev Band DLs- straight legx10, sumo straight legx10, conv.x10, sumox10

Blast Strap Fallouts- Standing pikex10, staning plankx3x10

Jump Rope- 500 jumps in 3:30. -2 seconds on my best time but, I am 20lbs heavier.

Did some very painful ankle distraction stuff. I carry a shitload of stress in my ankles, feet, and calves.

Dang man, none of those sound fun. Though I wonder, have you had any kind of swelling or bruising? That really would indicate more of the first two than the 3rd. If I’m annoying you with questions don’t hesitate to tell me so, I just find this stuff fascinating and I’m hoping to be treating spinal stuff by this time next year, so finding out things like this always helps me.

Definitely following though, and hope it’s good news and quick to heal…

The weird thing is, I’ve had a shit load of swelling, but zero bruising. Which leads me away from the tear and the avulsion. Also, the pain is a burning nervey pain when it gets bad. Hopefully something is just out of whack somewhere and I can get a doctor or chiro to put it back in place. Don’t worry, questions don’t annoy me. Quiet people piss me off to no end.

Friday-5-27-11- DE Upper

Bench-Fat Bar+120lbs of chain+175x12x3

Fat Bar Strict Press- 100lbsx25, 8, 7, 5, 5=50 total reps

Done. Feeling a little worn out.

Saturday- RE Stuff- 5-28-11-

Tons of shoulder distracts

Fat Bar Rev Band Bench- Greens- 165 bar weight- x100 with 4 different grips in 1:31
Hammer Time- 16lbs- 1 min on/30s off x 5 reps… yes this is 7 minutes of slegehammer swinging

Face Pulls- Lightx50
Seated I’s and T’s- 2 mini bands- 5x5/5= 50 total reps

Prowler- 90lbsx100 foot trips- did 11 trips in about 10 mins

Sunday- DE Lower, I guess- 5-29-11-

Power Cleans- 240 x 6x2<~~~ easy
Bent over row- 135x15, 225x12, 315x6, 225x10, 225 pronated x10
Flippy- Fifty Flips in 4mins exactly. Flippy weighs about 400lbs, I think.

Cleans dont hurt my hip too bad, probably because the weight is extremely submaximal compared to my deadlift.

Tuesday-5-31-11- ME Upper

explosive Push ups/pull ups- 6x3

Floor Press-
315x3, 345x1, 370x1, 400x1, 415x1<~~~ not an all time pr but the smoothest I have ever done a floor press, 430x0<~~~ got loose in the bottom, very slow descent

Military Press- 65lbsx50<~~~ probably had more in the tank but I got bored

2brd Manpon- Close Grips- 135x12, 225x6, 275x6, 315x5, 365x2= 31 total reps, was supposed to do 40 but jumped too heavy, oh well.

Band Assisted Pull-Ups- Light- Widex10, Closex10, Chinsx10, Wide + kip x10

Band Pull Aparts-Minisx2x50

Tons of band tractions/distractions. Figured out I have a tangled up, sliding surface disaster in my scalenes/pec minor/every internal rotator/1st rib. Need to work on that.

Wednesday- Poopy Day-6-1-11

Finally found out what is going on with my hip. Biceps Femoris tear and an impinged sciatic nerve. Both of these things will require physcial therapy for the next couple months. This sucks and all but now I have more time to devote to weaknesses. Hopefully, I will still be able to do push pull nationals in September.

After I left the doctors and he told me not to do anything with my hamstring:

Pulled a 90lb sled for a mile. Took 26mins exactly and was tougher than usual because I was in pain the entire time and this was the first time I’ve done this while wearing my vibrams.

Did some ankle distraction/calve load and tensioning. Really loosened a lot of stuff up.

I would have guessed something was wrong with the sciatic, but both a tear AND an impingement? Dang son. Did he say if it was impinged by the piriformis or some other small muscle overcompensating for the torn biceps femoris?

Good luck with the Physical Therapy. Hopefully you’ll find someone that’s into training and will work with you to get you back, rather than just tell you “not to do anything” with it for a while.

Friday-6-3-11- DE Upper

Sled- Explosive presses and pulls- 135lbsx6x3 for each

Bench- 170+mnis+80lbs of chain- 8x3
Log-Shoulders were beat to hell already- 25 first set, 10 second, stopped

Sled Rows- Trips of about 30 feet- 135x1, 180x1, 225x1<~~~~ my blast straps broke so no more rowing.

For conditioning today, Andy Deck and I played horse… with a 30lb medicine ball. We go through 2 games before I got tired of his bullshit no look shots. I am going to buy a 100lb ball and practice so next time we do this I will be draining half court shots and laughing my ass off.

Just to give you an idea of how bad this was, free throws felt like maximum efforts.

haha cunning plan!

Sunday-6-5-11- DELOAD!!! THANK YOU SWEET BABY JESUS!!!

Jump Rope x a billion

Squats- 350x5x2
Dimel Deads-225x2x25
Back Ext.-BWx2x40
Land Mine Side Bends-90lbsx3x15

Backward Sled Drags Through Hell… I am the sand- 90lbs for a bunch of trips for a distance that doesnt matter. It could have been 2 feet and it still would have sucked. But it was probably 100 feet. I could literally hear my quads crying.

Monday- First day of PT

I must be the luckiest person on Earth. My PT used to train at a very hardcore powerlifting gym and he is still a very big meathead. We talked all things strength related while he did some sort of massage that felt like he was repeatedly blasting a shotgun that fires spinning sideways baseball bats wrapped in barbwire into my ass. It sucked but when he was done, it was the first time I have walked without pain in 3 months.

Came home, sent about 50 billion emails, then stretched both hamstrings for about a half an hour. Whatever he did, I am sore already.

That’s awesome news about the PT! Always helps having a guy that’s been there before and knows how to help you get back to firing on all cylinders. Skillful description by the way, and your deload weights are above my some of my maxes. FML.

I saw Andy Deck’s log the other day on elite talking about the dimmel deadlift debacle…

Here it is straight from Dave Tate himself…Hedlesky wins!

Thanks buddy. I just want to pick heavy shit up again as soon as possible and I think this guy can definitely help me do that.
