Guitar and vocals here. Currently in a douche-rock band that does some stuff verging on metal. Used to be in an alt-metal band and got to open for some decent bands - Saliva, Mushroomhead, Bobaflex, a few others. By myself I got to open for Zach Myers of Shinedown which was unreal.
Itās not heavy metal (maybe a predecessor?), but More Than A Feeling was my alarm song this morning and Iāve been having a kickass day so far. Tom Scholz created what I consider the greatest guitar tone of all time that would stand up in modern metal if it was just downtuned. Bostonās Star Spangled Banner version is pretty metal.
Donāt quite know what genre this belongs to (turn on the CC for lyrics):
One of the most underrated bands out there
Iāve been a metal fan from the first time I heard Ozzy and Sabbath (I was born in '82). My tastes have evolved pretty significantly over time. I always liked the classic stuff (starting w/Sabbath IMO), but itās not until the last 2-3 years that I could really appreciate and enjoy the death growl vocal style. Even started trying to learn how to do it myself (I love practicing in my garage while I lift), and teaching my daughters how to do it. My 4 year old now says āgoodnight, I love youā in a death growl. Itās awesome.
Some bands Iāve been getting into lately (thanks to Spotify premium - arguably my most valuable streaming subscription):
Jinjer (watching Pisces reaction vids on YT was something of a hobby of mine for a few days the first time I heard them)
Suicide Silence (definitely not new, but I listen to them more now)
Lorna Shore
Spiritbox (another female vocalist thatās good at mixing clean & death vocals - like Tatiana from Jinjer))
Bodysnatcher
Brand of Sacrifice
Whitechapel (also not new, but WC definitely shifted my musical tastes more in this direction)
I guess a lot of these are considered metalcore (deathcore, specifically). At least I found them on various metalcore Spotify playlists. I like the grooves and breakdowns, so I guess thatās the sub-genre Iām into the most.
Speaking of metal (prog metal in this case), I recently went back and listened to Tool (Lateralus and 10,000 Days). Those albums are fucking incredible. I always thought Aenima was their best album (probably because it was the first one I heard), but Lateralus has definitely won me over.
I still canāt get into Fear Inoculum though. It gives me auditory blue balls every time I listen to it.
I didnāt really get Tool when I was younger (just thought it was too artsy or something). Then I started playing the drums, and became a big fan of their work. The drummer (Danny Carey) has his own style of playing, which I respect a lot.
The HU are metal as fuck. Their lyrics are taken from old Mongolian epics, with one song apparently copied verbatim from a rock carving.
Got a heavy metal tattoo for my 20th. Canāt say what it is as itās a fairly identifiable mark. Tis a black metal band logo
Going for another (big) one in the coming weeks provided this one heals correctly. My body has fairly extensive (and visible/identifiable) scarring throughout various regions, thus was worried perhaps the tattoo would keloid/form hypertrophic scarring and got a small/medium sized one first to test the waters.
Lets see it
Sent you email @marine77
Same here. A few of my buddies tried forcing tool on me back in high school and I just didnāt get it. Popped in the 10,000 days cd a few years after and I never looked back.
I can definitely see why, some of the songs seem to just be a massive buildup with no release. I kind of like it for the constant tension.
Also, spiritbox is the shit. The singer is amazing. I guess she (actually the entire band) was the latest incarnation of iwrestledabearonce, who I personally never liked, but cool to see their progression to more āmatureā music
I really like Fear Inoculum, but it has a few weird tracks. Some of the songs are 10 minutes of amazing drumming. It was the most drum heavy album IMO.
Mos def.
This is something else. Devin Townshend (strapping young lad), Frederick Thordendal (Meshuggah), and Gojira collaborate on this one.
Been getting more into stoner/doom metal lately (Wendler rejoice) and have followed a Youtube channel that posts full albums and singles as theyāre released. Hereās the gem of the group so far:
