Told you this kid was on roids:

Liszt and Paganini are fucking metal, you basement dwelling nerds!

Only cover of All Along the Watchtower as interpreted by Hendrix I actually like:

This dude was on lots of roids.

Seriously, if you’ve never heard of Shawn Lane, he was in another dimension altogether in terms of technical skill. There’s no other ā€œshredderā€ that can come close.

Heard of this guy? Just remembered I used to be a fan of this kind of stuff:

Caught a couple of clinics by him, Michael Angelo Batio and John Myung. John Myung’s actually a pretty good violinist.

Michael Angelo Batio was like the chillest music dude I’d ever met. a little like Wayne in Wayne’s World at the time. Think it was around 1998.

^This is just an example technical skill taken up to 11, not good musicianship.

Managed to get front row seats at a small gig in an underground pub by Bela Fleck and Victor Wooten. There was no stage. We were seated like 6 feet away from the band. Blew my mind.

No, really, this was the song that truly blew my mind. It’s perfection in every sense of the word. Missed the G3 concert where I lived cos I couldn’t afford tickets at the time so I never got to see Vai play live:

Traditional heavy metal release of the year? If not, post one that is better…

They are more or less all good actually. But my faves are probably The Temple and the Tomb and Live by the Whip. Or Infidel for the sing along chorus

Liszt’s predecessor, a guy named Ludwig van, was no slouch himself:

I just saw this and listened to it today. Loving the under-the-radar resurgence of THM.

I forced a conservatory grad friend to teach me to play the piano over a decade ago only because I wanted to play the moonlight sonata 3rd movement in return for co-funding the set up of a small music school, which ended up a pretty complicated story altogether so let’s just say the initial guys running it didn’t know shit about business but it’s still around today and I had to learn Japanese.

That’s like one of my favourite songs ever. Took me 3 fucking years. Still don’t know shit about theory other than reading notes, and my friend has never forgiven me for it since it was a ā€œNO I’m fucking learning THIS SONG while you teach me all the other noob shitā€ kind of situation I put him in.

Disclaimer: Don’t try this is you have no musical background. It would have taken much longer if I hadn’t already spent years learning technically complicated shit on the guitar though I never learned to read notes during the time.

I’m also a ā€œBeethoven 2nd movement denierā€. The Tempest has no fucking 2nd movement as well as far as I’m concerned.

I wanna be able to play it like this someday. Shut up, you basement dwelling purists:

Btw, this is how fucking technically complex the original La Campenella as interpreted by Liszt really is:
