Have You Ever Beta Orbited a Girl

You know what I mean, haha.

I did … I figured it was semantics but for the lurker who might not be aware of the distinction

the conclusions you come to through anecdotes are incredible dude. You saw a homeless dude, and THIS is where you go with that? You’re a fucking whack job. I’m sorry, but this one is just nuts. I’m tired of entertaining your bullshit.

I literally eat chic fil a at least 4 times every week.

I order the 12 ct nugget meal with large fries, 3 strips to go with it, and a large milkshake. I like their seasonal ones like the peppermint one in the winter, and the peach one in the summer. but when those are not available, strawberry and chocolate are go-tos.

I eat breakfast there when I can as well. That chicken biscuit is the best.

Of all the talking heads on TV, IMO Carlson is probably the least worst. However, I think it’s important to remember who is target audience is (middle-aged white men) and how he makes his living (sparking their outrage/indignation).

As to the clip itself, while I think he raises some decent questions I also think he’s trying to use facts (which I’ll take at face value as true) to spin a narrative that will entice his target audience.

For example, suicide is up. This is true. However, at no time does he bring up that one of the main drivers behind this is veteran suicides. Approximately 20 veterans kill themselves a day in the United States. That’s roughly 16% of total suicides. He also uses hyperbole to stir emotions in his target audience “If you’re a middle-aged man you probably know someone that’s committed suicide.” Respectfully, that’s doubtful. Roughly .028% of men will kill themselves each year so it’s pretty unlikely that you know a person that has taken their own life.

He raises a good question about mass shootings by men.

Then he talks about life expectancy. That seems obvious to me. Men gravitate towards more dangerous lines of work. Men are more reckless. Men are more likely to participate in dangerous activities. I was scrolling through my FB this morning and I saw a video of “the ring of fire” where 5-12 people stand in a circle(s) and then a bull is released. The last person to remain in the circle get a whopping $100. How many women do you think were participating in the video? Spoiler, zero.

He also tries to correlate alcohol and drug deaths to male life expectancy, which perhaps is true.

Then he brings up incarceration rates. Well, ya… Men, generally, are more violent than women. Jordan Peterson explained this pretty well in an interview he did years ago. It makes sense that more men would be incarcerated than women. That said, if we want men to be men then we should accept they’re likely to be incarcerated more than women, right?

Regarding education, more women graduate from college than men. Okay, is it actually helping women? What degrees are they earning? Are they of value? My guess is many are not. Women also tend to get degrees in less lucrative fields, like education.

I agree with the overmedication comments. I would need to see the statistics on his earnings comments to believe them. There is a pay gap between men and women and there most likely always will be and, as far as I can tell, the majority of the reasons are perfectly acceptable when put into context.

I think another thing that needs to be mentioned and is important for context is that there are roughly 6 million more women in the United States than men. Graduation rates by gender also appear to be state specific:

So, while it’s convenient to simply say more women graduate than men, it’s a very shallow analysis. Some of the disparity is clearly driven at the state level. What is Vermont doing that Mississippi isn’t? We also know there’s a disparity in graduation rates by race. How does that affect the gender disparity? It must, right? Plus, there’s a population disparity. There’s a lot to unpack there.

The problem with clips like this is the talking head tries to pack hours and hours of topics into a 5-minute segment doing the issue(s) a disservice at best.

Dude, no.

Yup, I know it is hard to comprehend others that think differently than you but then I’m the one being told to read Stoic haha. But thanks for letting me know you eat Chic-fil-A

I promise it is coming.

Agreed.

This, on the other hand, is actually a really good video. I am starting to really like Andrew Yang and most people would consider me a conservative.

Fwiw I mentioned polo and pwnishr when I entered the thread because they seemed to have given him more than he was worth, realized it, continued a bit anyways, and then given up on him under a highly helpful set of conditions (helpful to him if he’d reflect on it)

Sorry to you both if I pulled you back/deeper in

I bookmarked some (maybe all) of your book recommendations, hope I get to them, eventually, inshaAllah. Thanks

I have so much love for good analogies. I appreciate this.

@BrickHead links videos talking about the current crises or perceived crises (if you agree with it or not) of men in this country.

I tell a story about someone, a man, struggling, in direct response to those video to demonstrate that yes I think men are not being considered enough right now.

And I’m completely crazy?

You guys are either hardheaded, and looking to snipe me at every turn, or ya’ll fucking stupid as fuck. Either way, doesn’t seem to be much point in this thread anymore.

Do you really not see the difference in these two statements?

I do see differences, but the Venn diagram of the second one seems that it would completely encompass the first

The first statement actually mentions women tho, so it potentially causes a different emotional response

I didn’t notice how it was in direct response to brick however

Edit: yes I just didn’t notice, that’s all

you told a ‘story’ about one man and a dog in a car, and you extrapolated a societal issue of men getting the short end of the stick on a general level.

That’s fucking stupid, illogical, and yes, completely crazy.

Here’s a thing that might have served you better, only barely:

you went to a homeless community in downtown X. You looked around. There were hundreds of homeless folk gathered. And then you noticed something: they were all (or the vast majority were) men!

See, if you observed this, then you’d have something closer to resembling a sample size. N=1 is just not representative of a fucking thing.

Also, the thing I just described is not something you’ll find. I’ve seen quite a few homeless communities across the country. They have plenty of men and women everywhere.

Not that he would know this, but men make up a disproportional percentage of the homeless (something like 70% iirc).

Ergo, proof that men are struggling more than women because of the rigged system we have. If only women would start making men sandwiches again instead of getting fat and not learning to cook.

SAD!

It’s a good thing we have threads like this, because if I didn’t poke my head into one every so often, I’d never believe that people who think this way actually exist. Good fucking lord.
