Hard Work

Cav, sumo DL is a lot more hip and a lot less back than conventional DL. Since you have back issues, perhaps that’s why conventional is so much more painful for you than sumo?

(this is a belated response to a post you made a while ago in my desultory “log”)

Up, thanks a lot, you’re very sweet.

Punnyguy, so far my sumo DL only goes up to about 165 lbs or so, my regular DL has warmup at 155 and goes up into the mid 200s. My back has strengthened a great deal so I’m not sure it alone is the source of the problems. The “extreme sumo” I describe is strictly to work my squat in the lowest position. I did try a more modest sumo to see if it could replace my regular DL, but wasn’t any easier. Didn’t like the pressure it put on my knees.

Dropped by the fitness center last night. One other guy there, churning the bicycle, looking absolutely miserable. I knocked out 20 min on the elliptical, then did tri extensions, bi pulldowns and pec dec. I was getting swole while the poor guy just sweated. Then ate and ate and ate until bedtime. Damn, but I seem to need a lot of protein.

Just stopping in.

Hey Dude, drop by anytime, visitors are always welcome.

Looks like the teaching job is go. Went to one of the orientation sessions, the school has an extensive internet system for course schedules, syllabus, grading, the works. Got the textbook - ahem - “ActionScript 3.0 Game Programming University”. Three whole months of writing simple video games in Flash - should be fun.

Fun fact: running all over a campus to pick up book, register with HR, apply for parking sticker, run back to previous office cuz I left my pen there . . . all adds up to a reasonable conditioning session.

I lost 2 pounds bodyweight, hoping it’s the cardio I’ve been doing, not stress. Still on deload week, so did nothing but lockouts, hoping to toughen up the body for strength gains.

Hanging from chinup bar

hanging on dip station

someone using power rack, so couldn’t do squats - worked on shoulder pressing calf machine instead

then rack was available, so did bench press lockouts. Got up to 205, held for half a minute. the 185 felt so good I’m positive I could bench it for a new max.

I don’t have the money to buy and mail Christmas cards, so I make something with my graphics software and email to relatives and friends. Here’s this year’s quickie:

A week of deload, eating, taking it easy (well, sortof) and I am REFRESHED.

Squats
95 x 12
125 x 7
155 x 5
165 x 5
185 x 5
135 x 8

last set worked explosively (relatively). Pain free squats, feel good.

Leg Curl different machine
40 x 20
60 x 10
70 x 8
80 x 6

paused in flexed position, really worked it

Extreme sumo
145 x 10
185 x 7 . x 7

feels WEIRD when my body’s recovered, I can push it, really push it, and it’s not a problem. Can’t wait for the DOMS.

Amen Brutha.
Last year my ITB’s flared every time I did squats. It was like shin splints down the outside of the legs. Had to take about 6 months off for them to recover. Now squatting pain free.

Good lifting.

DUDE!

I’m really thrilled to hear you have work. Really thrilled. Now maybe you can let your brain relax a touch.

That’s fantastic news. Well done.

FUCK! You were shoulder pressing a calf machine? That is damn strong, just the stacks on those things are a couple of hundred pounds.

Oldman, thanks. You were off squats for half a year? Yech, what a punishment! Glad you’re better now.

Kent, I’d love to put my brain on hold, but it’s only a part time job . . . and it’s gone in March . . . maybe they’ll have a class or 2 for me after that . . . meanwhile, have to keep drawing unemployment benefits, from which they deduct the school earnings, so I don’t come out ahead . . . at least when I move, apartments & stuff will be cheaper.

Brett, not sure what image you’re drawing. This machine has pads for shoulders, you stand up on toes & flex calves up & down. I put my shoulders under the pads, as designed, stood up on whole feet, and held it a bit. I intended to stimulate spine, legs, as if doing squat walkouts. Was using about 3/4 weight stack.

BTW, always been strong on calf machines, no idea what’s up with that.

Surprisingly little DOMS from yesterday, so went in and made it a bench day:

Bench
45 x 12
95 x 9
125 x 9
135 x 8
155 x 4
15 x 15
95 x 20

last 2 sets done for speed to wear me out. Really, I hit chest and everything.

OH Press
45 x 15
65 x 12
85 x 5 . x 5 . x 5

strength still sucks, but could do them without pain, still feel refreshed.

Dips
did whatever I could - half down or whatever, about 4 or 5 sets

Pulldowns
60 x 20
80 x 16
100 x 10
120 x 7

I’m starting to notice it a bit more . . . just a tiny feeling of tightness in the sleeves of my jacket and coat.

I was envisaging you ripping it from the floor like Chief at the end of One flew over the cuckoo’s nest and pressing it overhead.

I have a vivid imagination.

Sigh . . . if only it were so . . . I like your imagination.

GOOD NEWS CAV . We should see some carry over to the workout, good to hear you ready to push it.

NOYCE Cav you deserve a break!

Benchin is looking good!

Dude, thanks, I hope so.

Matty, I’m moving within a couple of weeks, so I’m getting a break like it or not. And considering you bench more than I deadlift, you’re very generous.

good news on the job front
good work in the gym
moving too-

the positive train does not stop

great news all around

Great news on the job.

KM and Dog, thanks very much, your encouragement helps a lot.

Hadn’t done deadlifts in a couple of weeks, so grit teeth:

155 x 12 . x 12
185 x 4
245 x 4 . these were REALLY hard, then occurred to me the first sets pre-exhausted me
225 x 5 . x 6 . much better

Rear delt machine
60 x 12
80 x 10
100 x 6 . x 6

Cable pulldown emphasize bicep
80 x 16
100 x 10 . x 12
120 x 10
140 x 6 . x 6 . hmm, this seemed to weigh as much as me!

Forgot to mention, I got an apartment at the new place. It’ll be available first week of Jan, same as when my class starts. Will be moving within a couple of weeks.

Good news on the job!

Tis the season!
