Hard Work

Brett, thanks. My T level must have been off the scale.

Matty, it’s a national chain, really surprised it’s not round NY.

OK, something weird’s going on here. Bodyweight hasn’t budged in couple of months, yet a bit stronger here & there, and look a little better in the mirror - muscles seem a bit more etched. Surely I’m not losing fat & gaining muscle at the same time? Eating like crazy, trying to gain.

Anyway, was time for a squat day. Wound up doing nothing but squats, hogged the rack for almost an hour. Nobody else in the gym, fortunately. Piled up the thingees for the box, then squatted full range:

45 x 7
65 x 5
95 x 4
115 x 2 . x2 . x2 . x2 . x2
125 x1 . x1 . x1 . x1 . x1 . x1

Really P.O.'d they were so hard - almost couldn’t get out of the hole. Better than last time, but barely. Concentrate on leaning back instead of forward. Forgot to twist for scoliosis, but did everything else, arch back, pull bar into back, abs tight, etc.

Still thinking legs are reasonably strong but something in groin or somewhere needs strengthening. On that note, box squats down in the bottom position:

65 x 4
65 x 4

pretty hard, not surprising

If your bw hasnt budged but your getting stronger, looking better in the mirror, thats sounds like somethings working, keep on doing what your doing Bro!

Thanks, Matty. Actually, I might have been a tad premature, tonight I seem to be grabbing a bit more blubber around the midsection. Anyway, on to today’s workout:

      • BENCH PR * * *
      • BENCH PR * * *
      • BENCH PR * * *

Just as I was starting to think I would NEVER break my bench limit, I went and did it.

45 x 10
95 x 6
115 x 4
140 x 1 . feeling good, take the plunge:
155 x 1 . PR . PR . PR
not too bad, so slapped on another 5#
160 x1 . PR . PR . PR . PR
and I might have been able to do 165! will stop while ahead
120 x5 . x5 . x5 . x5

Matty’s upright row:
35 x 15
45 x 12
65 x 8
70 x 4 . x4 . x4 . x4 . x4

Pec dec
4 x 20
5 x 12 . x12 . x10 . x10 . x7

Rope pulldown
50 x 15
80 x 12
80 x 12
80 x 10
80 x 11
80 x 13 . stopped to chat before doing these, so got refreshed.

Maybe there’s hope for me yet!

Congrats on the PRs!

HELL yes its working.
Grrr.

nice work on the pr.

I am always scared of those buffets
they scare me like the 6 gallon of mayo at cosco

Way to go Cav! Congrats on the PR.

There’s nothing better than a PR. In the gym at least. Congratulations. Especially with bench, which I think is the hardest lift to break through plateaus.

I almost overlooked your Bench PR. Good going.

Nice job Cav!

Snap, as I am sure you are aware, setting non-gym PRs is possible and also cause for celebration.

NICE WORK CAV! Good for you, and im loving the Matty UR Rows!

PR Awsome work. Keep it rolling Bro.

Hard Work pays off! Nice work on the PR’s.

Thanks, everyone, for the kind words. It only took 30 years to get a 160 bench. Sure hope it doesn’t take another 30 to get over 200.

Oh, KM, it’s actually possible to keep carbs low at Golden Corral. Everything’s separated, so take meat, veggies, and as little rice/potatoes/pasta as you want.

You’re welcome, Matty, seemed like the easiest thing to call them.

Now in a deep funk. So depressed even Snapper’s new avatar doesn’t interest me. Which is why I never got around to posting last night’s workout. I actually went down in deadlifts:

95 x 10
135 x 5
185 x 3
225 x 3
245 x 3
265 x 1 . x1 . x1 . x1
255 x 1 . x1

God, it was hard, and I had done 285 the previous week. Maybe I can blame it on the Careers workshop at the state employment office. Was pretty dehydrated through the whole thing - we were on computers and they don’t allow drink near the machines. Drank a lot afterwards and ate at Boston Market - usually great food but got a stomachache this time.

Finished up with biceps curls, rows, and shrugs - all hard, no great weights.

Today so tired just went to the apartment fitness center and spent an easy half hour on the elliptical.

Feeling a little better today, but not much. Determined to work on box squats, low position only:
35 x 10
35 x 10
45 x 8 . x8 . x8 . x8 . x8 . x8

Very, very hard, was grunting and sobbing from the effort.

Leg X
4 x 10
5 x 10 . x10 . x10 . x10 . x10

Leg Curl
4 x 12 . x12
5 x 8 . x8

Seat Calf
45 x 15 . x15

called it a day

Oh, and Snapper’s avatar is looking more interesting

Nice going Cav, I believe it is possible to have episodes of body reomp where you can get a little leaner and not lose weight.

Well, Joe, it sure would be nice to get leaner and not lose weight. Doesn’t look like it’s happening in my case. I’m seeing fat sags where there’s never been any, and my whole belly area is more swollen than any other bodypart. Worse, I did deadlifts today and actually losing strength, or something. They were unbelievably stressful and painful, making me gasp, wheeze, almost choke.

Deadlifts
135 x 8
155 x 8
155 x 10
155 x 10
185 x 7
185 x 7

good god, it almost killed me. Finished up with some rows, pulldowns, DB row, nothing newsworthy.

I kicked up carbs a few weeks ago. Going to shut them down and see what happens. Really, really getting tired of playing 20 Questions with my body to see what the hell will make it stronger.

OK, shut off the rice & sweet potatoes, in fact, shut off everything non-Paleo. Had a long nap, then slept as long as possible. Feeling lots better this morning, muscles pumped and all. Tried some GHR and they were way easier than ever. Will start feeding back only Paleo carbs, like bananas and other fruit.

That which doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Good work Cav.

I have thought about going Paleo but haven’t made the jump yet.

Dude, I’m counting on it. Thanks.

Joe, I made the plunge many years ago. A couple of days later, I woke up in the morning feeling awesome, better than ever in my life. With that kind of payoff, the discipline is no problem.

I’m guessing some guys are less sensitive to diet than others, always amazes me how some folks can drink beer and chow pizza and still lift like a forklift. Have you noticed any pains or fatigue after eating non-Paleo stuff?
