Handling A**holes at Work?

Next time he tells you to do something, gently pat him on the head and walk away.

As you might know by now, I’m not a native speaker.
My knowledge of your language is based on lesseons in school and having studied 2 semesters in England after successfully applying for a scholarship. (and reading the atomic dog)

I appreciate your critique however.
Don´t think I did never work with different conditions. A job in which you are told to shut up might not be so different from standing at the door and dealing with drunken scum after all.

As I said the way you maintain your personal rights depends on the context. Nevertheless you should do it or tell your self respect good bye.

I don´t know about your human resource management techniques. If you tell your subordinates to shut up (without comparable behaviour from their side) several things can happen.
You get punched in the head (or kicked or smashed and most likely deserve it).
You get a letter form their lawyer.
They will ostracize you (oh nooooo).
Their morale will be low, they won´t put in effort, are angry, sad and suffer at work.
The whole working climate will deteriorate. Co workers will suffer from it as well.

This leads to less output just because you had to be a bitch.
You´d have a lot of work to do in order to turn the steering wheel towards efficient work.
Maybe you´d lose your own job before, because your boss identifies the problem.

How old are you, son? You sound genuine and sincere but also immature…as you get older and sink into the “real world”, its a very different ball game, and you need to pay attention where and how you spill your testosterone. Particularly if you want to be part of corporate machinery in a country like Germany…seriously.

While its not anywhere near as litigious as the yank-bank, every action of yours in the corporate world is monitored and reported, and you will hear/see none of it (but you’ll feel the pain nonetheless) while your file is handed around between corporate setups.

Thats one of the reasons a lot of middle aged american and european men lift weights and/or watch boxing and football on television - it allows them a good outlet for all that test, and keeps them from getting into an unfortunate situation by waving their dicks at the wrong time, in the wrong place.

side note, that’s also the reason why you tell someone to “zip it” when you want them to clam up - men get themselves into bad situations when they wave it around fearlessly, failing to notice the “kitana” up over the fireplace at Human resources. Zipping it up keeps you safe till you can hit the gym and vent.

Beans is offering up the best advice here. Be better at your job and a couple things will happen. He will stop bothering you and annoy someone who sucks more, or you will be able to get a better job within the company, or at a new place. Either way you win.

No, It’s not his PERMANENT boss, but it’s still his superior.

The OP is in a different situation. My response having been in consulting and encountered many a project manager who couldn’t manage themselves out of a barn is to simply do your job. If you are consulting, there is more at stake than your ego. He is the client and dipshit or not, he has the purse strings. He knows this which is why he can get away with it.

Document carefully, keep your mouth shut, do your job and wait for the next engagement. If it gets so bad, talk to your boss at your work and have the higher ups handle it. Of course, you better make sure you have everything well documented as they usually take their side and not yours.

Good luck and learn patience through this ordeal. There is an abundance of assholes in the world, and he is but one you will encounter in life’s journey. Use this as practice for when things get really dicey.

Good luck in resolving your situation.

This is good advice.

You could also try going to the guy privately and asking him if you’ve done something to offend/upset him. Maybe he thinks you’ve done something that’s making him treat you this way…maybe you haven’t and it’s a misunderstanding…maybe he doesn’t realize when he tells you to ‘shut up’ that it’s upsetting you…I have a hard time understanding how this could be, but some people are just dumb fucks.

The moment I read this I heard this in my big ol head.

Nut-up or shut-up!

Just sayin…

Don’t go through life letting “other” peoples problems be yours…

Find ways to send a “personal” message, something that says don’t tread on me.

HOWEVER, if yer the one who’s fucking up, know the difference!

Yes to all of this.

Also, NEVER do ANYTHING that can make you look bad and give them a reason to come back at you.

ALWAYS take the higher ground, as hard as it can be sometimes.

I donÃ???Ã???Ã??Ã?´t think heÃ???Ã???Ã??Ã?´d loose the job if he’d fight for his personal rights.

How you do it depends on the conditions but it should be done.

If I was expected to accept such behaviour at work, I?????´d rather search for a different employer.
Those kind of people need to be shown that they can?????´t treat someone respectable that way.
If they can treat you that way, well maybe you are not respectable.

Once you start working in the real world, then talk.

This isn’t a hollywood movie, and if one of my staff EVER talked to me the way you are saying to, they would e fired

haha, this guys taking the easy way out by being all respectful and nice, if you told me to shut up I’d laugh in your face and tell you to go fuck yourself. Boo hoo you’ll fire me so what? It’s a part of life. blatant disrespect should be fought back with blatant disrespect, and being told to shut up when being professional is incredibly disrespectful. I agree that everyone should have thick skin in the workforce, but when you’re being singled out and talked down to DESPITE working well just cuz your assface of a boss is having a bad day and decides to take it out on you, that’s where I draw the line. Face it you may think your hard talking shit to your employees because your the boss, but you’d be quivering in your boots if you pushed the wrong person to the point that they feel the need to bring back a gun to blow out your brains with.

Have fun with your criminal record and low paying remedial job because you “nutted-up” all hardcorez and demanded your respect.

I’ll be sitting here, knowing how to handle the situation like an adult, having earned the respect of my boss and my staff, still making a shit load of money.

Agreed. It is easy to spot those that will always be employees and those that will employ.

Cool story, bro.

How far have YOU made it in life? I bet you’ve gotten really far by keepin’ it real like that.

This reminds me of a Dave Chappelle sketch…a million internetz to the first person to post the clip I’m thinking of.

I had some problems with a coworker (he wasn’t my boss though) getting on my case about petty bullshit. I got fed up one day, yelled at him once and from then on he left me alone. Sometimes it’s healthy to let it out and show some genuine anger.

Maybe there are cultural differences. In Germany it is outrageous to tell someone to shut up in a professional environment (unless it´s among friends and rough and tumble play).
Maybe it happens on construction sites but not on higher levels.

Even on construction sites, towards the cleaning staff or other low qualified workers it is morally wrong.

Maybe it´s different in your country. At least it would explain the dick waving in the internet.
If you have to suppress your feelings at work and get treated like a piece of crap without the possibility of redemption you want to be a real man somewhere.

enjoy your unemployment if you go that route.

LOL. Once you step away from the college text books and into the real world you will understand, that as an adult, “acting like a real man” doesn’t involve violence or verbal altercation.

Yes sometimes you get treated like shit at work, yes the real world is difficult, yes sometimes you have to eat a little humble pie.

Dude, you haven’t a clue what a “real man” is.

I’ve found that the best way to handle assholes at work is to wear latex gloves and wash your hands repeatedly throughout the day.

ok, sorry… wanted to post that since I saw the thread title a few days back. Reminded me of that thread where some kid asked if 45lbs equaled 45lbs and someone said something like ‘how about 45lbs of chocolate covered assholes’… hilarious.

Anyway, Mr. CountingBeans nailed it. College texts and classroom exercises are nothing compared to the actual experience in an office or corporate environment.

You will NEVER regret taking the high road, keeping your cool, and timing your response. I’ve found the learning experienced involved in dealing with altercations in a work environment are worth far more than the satisfaction of breaking someone’s face at the water cooler. If someone were to physically attack you first, self defense is a different story. However, if you throw the first punch, get ready for the ramifications of resorting to violence in the wrong arena.

What’s the saying about divorce? “Living well is the best revenge”?
Same applies here. Do your work, put in your time, bust your ass, and succeed.

When keepin’ it real goes wrong.

But I can’t get youtube at work, so I’ll settle for .5 million internetz for Lanky.

I always think it’s hilarious when people think keeping their pride is worth being unemployed. I’m not saying you want to walk around being everybody’s bitch, there is certainly a line, but being told to shut up is definitely not where the line is.
