Does anyone else sometimes feel that the growing “I am a man and a man does x and y and blah blah” stuff is getting eerily similar to the “I am a woman and I don’t need to x and y” stuff? (in terms of accrediting ourselves rather than direct parallels)
I understand the authenticity behind all of this, as well as the validity of many of the things said in this thread. Another part of me feels it’s almost like a paradigm shift. This whole dick-waving thing is getting quite ignominious these days. It seems like culture seems so focused on telling everyone how to be a man or what makes them such great men instead of just being a real, actual person. Being empowered is great, I am FOR that. I gotta say though, some of this stuff is part of the problem I feel.
I don’t think anything can sum up how I feel better than this.
Yes. These are reactions, equal opposite reactions.
If a “man” says X then a “woman” is compelled to be or say or do (-x).
If it was a thinking response instead of a reaction things (needs, social constructs, etc.) would be much more similar rather than the diametric opposition we see trending lately.
Man & woman in quotes above because they’re really just caricatures of what they think one should be.
HowToBeast keeps showing up on my YouTube recommended. He seems quite popular but the dude is an actual caricature. I can appreciate the work ethic, but it’s like watching an empty shell. I actually feel quietly sad for him despite how strange that sounds. His content is clearly what people want to see but something about it is extremely depressing that this is what it’s got to.
I looked him up. I know who he is. His stuff has showed up on my feeds. Don’t like his content and don’t like his wife’s content, especially his wife’s content.
I am actually thinking of resurrecting my defunct blog and channel that I never actually worked on and putting out my own content. I’m not sure how I’ll monetize it considering speaking of “what happened” and what is happening and being a responsible man and navigating the current environment can make money.
There are also numerous people who I want to interview.
This perhaps may come off as some cliche bullshit, but sometimes the people that are concerned the least about monetizing something are the ones who stumble into it the most.
I suppose the cliche would be something like “Follow your passion and the profits will come” or something like that. And of course its not a guarantee but its not a unique story that people who do things just for the passion of it and no concern for if it makes money often find themselves surrounded by it.
I think judging by the length and engagement of this thread (that I have only skimmed and followed as it grew) shows that there is, at the least, a market for the discussion… Getting it to the masses is a different story though, and there is already plenty of it out there you’ll have to cut through if your plan is eventually to make it a living.
I have a few books you talked about a long time ago on my “to read list”, but am unsure of the content creators you mentioned. At a certain point I just tried to avoid all online content creators on this stuff because I could feel myself getting a bit sucked in, unable to differentiate what was worthy content or not.
And do it. I’d surely GIVE YOU A LIKE AND HIT THAT SUBSCRIBE BUTTON.
What I would cover:
Lifting (competed in a show and longtime BB fan)
Nutrition (I am an RD)
Sexual Revolution/“dating”/marriage (all are jumbled together)
Fatherhood/homeschooling
Work
Money/work
I’d want to do informative and educational stuff, book reviews, and interviews. I just have to figure it out when I have a full time job, kids, home, wife and friends. I have procrastinated on this idea for years. I think I should do it even if it might be futile.
If they are ideas that have bounced around in your head for a while, short 5-minute ramblings could be your bread and butter, and then expand and do other things when you have the time. You don’t need to do super editing or anything overly time-consuming. Gauge the interest and see if you enjoy it as much as you think you might.
If you are measuring the futility by the money being made they will almost certainly be “futile”, certainly in the beginning at least.
How many YouTube channels, blogs, ebooks and podcasts are out there vs how many people do it for a living, fitness related or otherwise? Art (and let’s call this art) in general has a very low likelihood of being a career, so do it from a point of passion and measure “futility” by how accurately you get your point across and the quality of your presentation and the discussions you have.
Perhaps gathering and presenting your thoughts to no one online for no money will make you a better in person communicator of them
You’re right. Perhaps this isn’t the best way to put it, but I have a lot of stuff in my and I think it would benefit me to put it in video and written form. It has been collected through years of consuming content (books included), life experience, and self reflection. Plus there are people I want to discuss these subjects with.
Thanks for the tips.
