There must be one T-Nationer from christchurch…!
I am there for 3 months, and want to know which gym is the best! (by the usual standards of tons of plates, room to deadlift, and if possible some of those crazy ass nautilus machines)

I used to train at Les Mills in the city. The Gym on Cashel Street(smack bang in the middle of town) re-opened about a week before I left so I only got to check it out twice. Their interim gym on Hereford Street was pretty good, not sure if it’s still open. I know there are other branches in around the city, Riccarton, Ferrymead, etc. Where will you be living?
Decent gym, commercial though so bring your headphones. The atmosphere changed a lot depending on the time of day. Some big blokes train there, one of the P.T. is a figure competitor, I saw chicks squat 1.5 bw for reps pretty often.
They have a deadlift platform with plates dedicated for it, squat racks and all the rest.
Not 24hr though. It seems all 24hr gyms in Aus and N.Z. don’t have free weights as this puts their insurance through the roof.
There are others though this was the most convenient for me.
Forgot to say, the fees will probably be quite high on anything under a 1yr contract.
So, yeah.
If you are looking for something cheap, the uni one remains an option… while staying Far away from the 4.00-6.00pm slot.
Otherwise I am not sure as I moved here recently, curious to see if this thread could give me leads to a new gym, thanks for starting it OP.
well it turned out i had got a years membership at a fairly terrible gym where I am, when there is a great one about 10 mins walk further from my house, so i didn’t want that to happen again
I’ll be living on campus. I am doing a placement with the uni for some research.
Is the uni gym good? I’ve been to a few and they can be a mixed bag.
also I am only there for 3 months so membership may be problematic…
Just go check the rec center seriously and chat with whoever is at the reception for the membership thingy, it might fit your needs. The “it’s at walking distance” part is kinda cool too. There are a few serious guys in the pack lifting too, so it could be worse.
Did you try asking the guys at nzbodybuilding? should get more advices there.
