But why do they try so hard to make people feel that Bodybuilding is not welcomed in their facility? What is so bad about bodybuilding? Why the need for the signs and lack of interaction on their facebook page when it comes to bodybuilding? Planet Fitness does this like crazy and many people are following their example. You would think people would enjoy being around people who are serious about the gym.
Its like they are prejudiced against men and women who lift weights. That’s how it comes off as. They lose members because of this mindset also. You do not chase away people just because they enjoy bodybuilding.

But they have chased them away cause they are the 1%.
The bodybuilding world has always been a small niche sport, Arnold took it to its peak and it may never get back there. This is a societal issue.

Actually, no.
A lot of people don’t enjoy being around people who are serious about the gym.

They might lose a FEW members because of this.
They probably GAIN a lot more members than they lose.
Many people buy gym memberships just because it’s a thing to do, or because they want someplace to get on the treadmill when it snows, or because they like having access to a spa. They’re seriously turned off by seeing big muscular assholes dropping 120-pound dumbbells and flexing in the mirror between sets. Show them a gym where that happens, they’re canceling the membership that day and finding the nearest place where they can get on an elliptical for 30 minutes while watching The View.
Planet Fitness’ success is the perfect example of this. They have capitalized on the desires of many to have a place. While I take issue with their use of “judgement free zone” when they’re as judgemental as it gets, I have no problem with their existence. They offer a service. Some people really dig that service, or at least will pony up cash so they can walk on a treadmill on Saturday mornings without hearing big weights clattering around in the background. I would prefer to work out in a different environment, so I pass.
OP, have you been in the gym yet since the “change”?
Maybe they aren’t turning their back to weight lifters? You said they had a solid base of weight lifting clientele. Maybe, they don’t feel like they need to target those clients with advertisement? Maybe they have the space after a possible remodeling to have some of it dedicated to female yoga enthusiast with banging backsides and they are trying to get them to come to their gym to increase their revenue?

Bingo, you never see fat people in fast food commercials.
