has to be their choice. When you take away an individual’s right to their own life, yes, it’ll breed contempt. Not always, but in a greater proportion, I’d imagine, than otherwise.
As it does to me. That line of reasoning was one of the main reasons I joined.
I have zero problem with that as long as it’s their choice. There are plenty of Gov and NGOs that’d be happy to give them the opportunity.
Not sure - I know there are differences between populations and national and religious identity between Israel and the US that could be contributing factors either to how effective a program like that would be in the US…Jewbacca et al could have a much better insight into that question than I would…
I can point you to any number of politicians and celebrities virtue signaling about gun control, which usually is accompanied by characterizing anyone who disagrees with them as lacking good character. This is nothing new.
Meanwhile I have yet to hear any specific policy proposals from Jimmy Kimmel, Steven Colbert, or a traumatized teenager. Just lots of vague notions and pleas for unspecified actions. This is also nothing new.
Everyone keeps using the word “common sense” gun control, so I started this thread in the hopes that someone could explain exactly what that is.
Or did you start it to confirm what you already believe? As you conveniently left out politicians’, GOP politicians’, claims we can do nothing or the nut jobs from that side who are already calling the survivors crisis actors. Even Trump Jr is spewing conspiracy theories.
Something is missing from people’s lives. Maybe it’s lack of a father figure. Maybe it’s poor parenting in general. Maybe being constantly inundated by memes on social media leaves people feeling insecure/hollow. Etc etc… It’s the “like” generation/culture.
I think service helps to fill those holes maybe solves some of those problems. I’ve seen it enough in real life to think it would work on a larger scale.
Certainly doesn’t completely solve the issue but I think it helps.
It’s all we have to go by. We even have age restrictions for political offices.
Which doesn’t make what I said bad.
What if you BSed your way through the military?
Now, I would say someone who played XBox all the time is a better risk than someone who was out committing crimes or who was expelled from school for behavioral reasons.
I guess we just disagree here, which is fine. I don’t think age is indicative of anything. You’ve been on the planet longer whopty do.
No, not bad. Just arbitrary and, imo, an ineffective measure.
No one skates that good.
People that commit crimes are already excluded from ownership, though (felons anyway). So waiting to see if they commit a crime seems like a moot point to me.
In a country where Alex Jones is a thing and where people are already calling Parkland survivors crisis actors, as they did and do with Sandy Hook, I would say there is something rotten here.
It could help but I don’t know if it can cure what ails us. There is something wrong culturally.
I disapprove of anyone who characterizes me as uncaring or having bad intentions because we disagree on policy, especially when nobody seems to be able to explain exactly what those policies are.
I still think these are fringe elements/the minority of society. The vast vast vast majority of people I’ve spoken to, in person and online, think this shooting was horrendous and that we should actively try to find a way to better prevent similar events in the future.
I said this in another thread and I think it holds true here, social media and the 24/hr unverified hit print then check the facts media of today makes everything seem far worse than it really is.
I agree, it’s a great question, and independent of any new restrictions on guns.
Let’s look at similarly situated countries that don’t have this problem, fully stipulating that these countries’ lack of mass shooting events are not a function of their more restrictive gun laws.
The president acknowledges he listens to Alex Jones. His son liked some tweets from people accusing the Parkland survivors of being crisis actors. Rush Limbaugh has accused the kids of operating by some playbook. Before that we had Obama is a Muslim who is going to take away our guns. We have a significant number of people who are either incredibly gullible (stupid maybe?) or certifiably insane. Who the hell actually contacts Sandy Hook parents to accuse them of being actors?
