I think a smith and Wesson m&p 15 would be dope. Only .22 but cheap to shoot and supposed to be a blast.
The M&P 15 comes in 556. They have a number of different models you can choose from.
Even better. In all honestly I’m a big fan of .22 just cause it’s so cheap to shoot. I enjoy shooting a .45 or 9mm the most, but you really can’t go wrong with .22
Yeah if you can find it.
I just got back from my local gun shop. I went ahead with the Glock 17 as he has very large hands. Picked up 6 extra mags for the glock and 20 pmags (they had a great deal going) for the AR.

I have a 500 rounds of 9MM to go with it and 2,000 rounds of 223 as well.

Oh and to just rub it in - I have no issue finding 22LR =D. I only have around 30,0000 rounds of it mwa haha.

My brother turns 21 in about a month and I wanted to put him on the path of gunslinging righteousness. Anyways he will be gifted this and a glock 17 I am thinking. Any other suggestions?
If you are set on a Glock for him, I would give a G19 consideration if your brother would be thinking about CC’ing. I think it hits a sweet spot of concealability, light weight and firepower. If CC duty is not needed, G17 would get the nod from me.

He is a lucky little bastard.
In all honesty I am the lucky one. Both of my brothers have helped me tremendously with my little guy. Helping pick him up from school and watching him etc when I had to be in class, work, or court. And neither have complained once and have always been there for me. Just a small gesture on my part to show my appreciation.

I will be gifting the younger one something similar, but he doesn’t turn 18 until February.

Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t glocks lacking in safety features?
Here is your kind correction. Glock pistols are designed with three independent safety mechanisms to prevent accidental discharge. Ultimately your finger is the FIRST safety, so this really make 4 total safeties. On a side note no one seems to care that a revolver has no safeties, typically arent drop safe and few take issue with that fact.

Keep your finger off the trigger until the tool is pointed at something you are willing to destroy. I carry a G17/19 all day long pointed at my junk (appendix carry) without fear. People should always respect the tool, do not fear it and get training. Gun carry is truely a Martial Art. We are not born knowing this stuff.

Anyways, hope this helps.

Thanks.

Okay, opinion time guys:

BCM has some killer deals on complete uppers w/ BCG right now. Just what I’m looking for running about $700 (which is more than I want to spend, but it is $365 off and BCM).

The other option is a Wilson Combat barrel and their full auto BCG (which is on sale for $99).

Both options will net the same $ once fully built, and both quality manufactures, but the Wilson option allows me to customize a bit more.

What say ye?

Beans - take a look at Palmetto State Armory - www.palmettostatearmory.com. I am slowly piecing together an AR and have picked up several items from PSA, including a really nice 1:7 chf midlength gas system with rifle length iron sights upper. They run lots of sales and often have some especially good “blems” deals. Any blems are cosmetic only - for example, less than perfect logo engraving. Super good customer service.

I’ve spent some time over there for sure. Correct me if I’m wrong but barrel and bolt are the most important things here (including feed ramps matching up, which could mean smithing depending on tolerances between manufactures.) And getting them from the same manufacturer is preferred.

So, I planned on getting everything pretty much, but the barrel and bolt from PSA, lol. Outside of Magpul furniture.

This will be the boy’s rifle after he turns of age (21) or we move to a free state and he can posses it. So longevity is key here.

The barrel and bolt are important to control headspace. If there is a local smith in your area, he will have headspace gauges to check. If it is out of spec, it could lead to an unsafe firing condition. That said, any bolt/barrel from reputable manufacturers should headspace correctly.

A free float handguard will help with accuracy and I think that rules out a lot of the magpul offerings.

Otherwise, the only room for error is getting the wrong length gas tube, buffer tube, and buffer weight.

Do your research and you won’t have any problems.

I think for the most part if you purchase components made to a min of mil-spec, you should have no problems. Headspace is important, but if each component is made to spec, it should all fit just fine. There are really only a handful of barrel makers, bolt makers, etc. In terms of longevity, my understanding is that a chf barrel (cryo treated if you really want to spend the $) is probably the toughest barrel you can get for a reasonable price. I think that a stainless barrel is supposed to be a bit more accurate out of the box, but durability isn’t quite as good as chf.

I have read that a midlength gas system is “easier” on a rifle than a carbine length system, but I suspect you have to be shooting many thousands of rounds before it makes a difference.

Please note - I am not at all an expert on the AR or any other firearm. I just like guns and shooting in general and read a lot. I will not have ever fired an AR until I fire my homebrew for the first time.

Same lol.

Pulled the trigger on this bitch.

More than I wanted to spend, but I’ll be okay, lol.

Any of you tried any remanufactured ammo?

Yes. It’s generally fine for plinking and cheaper. Try to find a reputable dealer and not some hole in the wall operation selling reloads at a gun show.

I’ve run about 200 rounds through my GP100 (100 of 38 and 100 of 357) over the last 3 weeks. Shoots like a dream, however it is filthy as hell. Takes twice as long to clean than Remington white box.

But for less than half the price, I’ll deal.

Are you shooting lead bullets in your reloads? Those are messier than the FMJ or plated bullets.

People say some powders are dirtier than others as well, but I’ve not seen a huge difference in my experiments.

Yes, and they are dirtier than a whore on prom night, but cheaper too.
