I really like .380’s. They are actually a lot of fun to shoot and I am a ‘big caliber’ kind of guy. The .380’s are actually my wife’s guns, but I love to shoot them and I don’t give a shit if the handle is pink. So she likes pink.

People criticize them as a defense round, but I beg to differ. I damn sure wouldn’t want to be hit with one.
This is true. I have read articles from a few folks and spoken to two people personally, one was my old boss, who have been shot. They didn’t give a fuck what caliber it was. All they cared about was NOT getting hit again, and stopping the bleeding.

However, Since the discussion is on the.380’s defensive effectiveness, I would state that the .380 is generally NOT accepted as a primary defensive caliber weapon. A .380 round is essentially a 9mm short, which is underpowered. Most .380 bullets do not meet the FBI’s recommended minimum penetration depth of 12"-18". In addition to the aforementioned details, most .380 weapons are fucking tiny. Tiny guns are quite difficult to hit targets with any consistency due to their short barrel lengths and the muzzle flip. As with ALL handgun calibers, shot placement and follow up shots are required to STOP a fight. This is especially true if your assailant(s) are hopped up on adrenaline and some kind of drug. MOST .380 have pitiful magazine capacities also. Most people end up putting a magazine extension on the weapon to fit their hand. Now they have a 9mm sized grip and a snub nosed pistol that can’t hit shit outside of 5’. Why not just get a 9mm. The weapon isn’t that much larger, has on average of twice the mag capacity and the slightly larger pistol will help with recoil impulse and allow better followup shots.
But you say, Dawg, I or my girl have small hands… so does my wife. She carries a Glock 19. My 8 year old son also can shoot the fuck out of my G19 and my full sized G17. You / she needs training my friend.

If you have a .380, use what you got. If you are serious about “defensive weapons” a proper fighting pistol is recommended. If home defense is your scenario you would be hard pressed to beat a 20 gauge youth model pump action shotgun running OO Buck. Either way, get a weapon light on that thing!
Well, the best defensive handgun is the one you can use easily and shoot accurately. So for my wife, .380’s are perfect. With Hornady Zombie Max ammo, it does well. I personally carry 9 or .357 magnum and sometimes .45.

Picked up a Ruger GP100 .357.

Very nice weapon. Not going to be a carry piece, but good for the range and those that need recoil control. (This is mainly my wife’s target pistol.)
Very nice, a friend has one and always enjoyed shooting it.

I picked up a FNX 45 tactical this Christmas. I have been eyeing one for awhile, but they have also been hard to find in my area.
That is a handsome firearm. How does it shoot?

I was impressed with how good the sites were on the Ruger from the factory. To the right 3-5 inches, but much better than I expected.
Shoots like a dream. The recoil is very minimal. Even my current gf who has very small hands had no trouble with it. I was surprised at how small the grips are with it having a 15 round capacity.
I have to get an FNX 45 now. Got to check it out yesterday at Green Top in Ashland and it felt really sweet in the hand. The clerk let me take it apart, it looked and felt like quality. The HK45 actually felt a little nicer, but I really hated the mag release on that thing.

I bought one in black right after the holidays. I have put about 1500 rounds through it. And I have to say I love the gun in every aspect. Have also shot the HK45 and still like the FNX better. I am going to pick one up in the FDE soon too.

I went out this weekend and shot skeet for the first time. Although I was terrible it was a lot of fun and I’m going to join the club here so I can go more often. Anyone have any good resources for someone just starting in the sport?

You can nerd it up big time and read 10000 books on the subject. The BEST thing to do is buy a couple hundred shells and clays and shoot them fuckers.

One tip tho, I learned to not look down the barrel as in a rifle, lining up two sight. Instead just worry about the bead. While I’m on that. keep your eye on the clay. The bead should be fuzzy in your peripheral vision. If you have focus on the bead, the clay will be fuzzy and you will miss most times. Eventually, you’ll be able to just point and shoot without thinking about shit. It’s kind of like riding a bike when everything just “clicks”.

I was having a really hard time at first because I didn’t know where to aim (still don’t really). We were lucky enough to have an experienced guy there who gave us pointers, but I need to practice more to figure out sight, hold, and break points. I was basically winging it and shooting way behind everything and letting some go because I couldn’t pick them up. For about 35 bucks it’s the most fun I’ve ever had at a range.

I’m so bad at skeet. So, so bad…

How is it on Ammo selection, specifically cheap target ammo? I have a Colt 1911 that is very picky when it comes to cheap target ammo. I haven’t found any quality ammo that it doesn’t like, but there is little on the cheap end of the spectrum that it does like.

If I might ask, how are you telling the difference?

I ran blazer brass, regular blazer, tula, white box winchester, Federal target ammo, PDX1, Remington UMC, American Eagle, Magtech guardian gold, PMC bronze, Wolf, and some magtech through it.

I had zero malfunctions. My girl went through 4 magazines with it. She liked it too, but got 2 stovepipes from limp wristing it a bit on the first couple shots. She has very small hands and the grip is a little larger.

It depends on their trajectory but the biggest thing is to wait until the skeet almost peaks to shoot. If going straight away from you shoot slightly below it. If going across lead it by a foot or so.

Jams. For example out of a 100 round box of Winchester 230 grain target loads 8 or 9 rounds will jam, meaning the slide will get stuck about 1/2 inch shy of battery. You can give the back of the slide a slight bump and it will go into battery and shoot but of course you shouldn’t do that. Blazers were also pretty bad, same problem. I’ve never had a problem with the 50 round box of Winchester 230 grain FMJs, Remington UMC also works fine and I’ve shot several thousand rounds.

Same thing with defense loads, there are a few brands that I’ve shot a few hundred rounds of, and therefore am confident in, and that’s all I buy. But in these days of “shortages” and rising prices I would rather not have to be picky.

That’s fantastic! Or maybe not, since I won’t be able to sleep til I scrape up the dough.

I’m finally done fucking with my ak. May be taking a carbine course next week and will try to get some footage if so.
