Nobody has answered your question, but just so you are not being ignored I don’t. I have shot a few 9’s but I am not really a fan. I don’t dislike them, but I just rather have other weapons. Of the 9’s I shot, I like the S&W and the Ruger the best. I am not a fan of the Glock’s. They are too light and very plain looking for my taste. They’ll do the job though. It’s personal preference, if you like the Hi-Point, get it. Just don’t get it because just because it’s cheap, if it is. I don’t know.

Pat,
For the holster I bought it from Brownells. They only seem to carry them for 1911 and Glock. Probably just most popular models. They are a little pricey but I think they are worth it. Brownells has a good return policy if you do not like it. As for the NRA, been a member for over twenty years. It used to get you a discount at some gun shops but that seems to have dried up. My membership is due and not sure I will renew. I see it as supporting a good cause. They have managed to alienate some people with their “extreme” views. For example, Teflon coated bullets had cops worried because they might defeat body armor. NRA was not in favor of banning any type of ammo. LE concerns not necessarily valid. The Teflon comes off in barrel not as capable of defeating armor as was assumed. If you call them ask about the legal backing. They used to say they had lawyers for gun related causes, if they took your case.

One other thing on carrying a gun, you may want to look at an umbrella insurance policy. If you have to defend yourself you may get sued.

Ryuubane, no experience with hipoint, have not heard good things. They made a target.22 that was supposed to be okay. Like Pat said, do not buy it just because it is cheap. If you like it get it. Right now guns are hard to get but when I get one I plan to have it and use it for a long time.

Good stuff. Will definitely look into those holsters.
I am on the fence with the NRA membership. My Rugers came with a discounted membership price, $25 for a year, but I just don’t know if it’s worth it. I certainly support them protecting my gun rights and if it takes me joining to protect them I will. But I’d figure some benefits to membership might help me make my decision and I just don’t see any real benefits personally other than I get to piss off anti-gun people with it. I figure open carry would piss them off even more though :).

Not sure what to look at with an umbrella policy… But it might be worth a look. I certainly hope I never have to use them to protect myself, I hope it can just stay a hobby. Of course, if I feel threatened enough to pull it, it’s pulling it out with intent to kill no just disarm or maim. If I am pulling it on somebody, my life or that of my family is legitimately in danger. So I hope and pray it never comes to that. I certainly do nut underestimate the seriousness of pulling out a gun.

I guess there are family members of the prick to worry about too. So if it’s not to expensive, it might be a good thing. Lord knows if such a situation arose, I’d certainly have enough problems without getting sued. Let’s just say, I intend for this to be a hobby with the side benefit of protection. That and scaring the ever-living-shit out of my daughter’s dates

The policy I had when I first started carrying in Colorado was less than $200.00 per year for 2,000,000.00 in coverage. I just wanted to be fairly sure some dirtbags family would not get my condo if I had to defend myself. When I carried in Iowa is was just a college student or factory worker and there was nothing for anyone to get. Old car and motorcycle were the only things I owned.

For me the insurance was an after thought. I did keep in touch with a decent lawyer I knew just in case I ran in to a law enforcement officer that might not be up to date on the laws regarding concealed carry. So are you planning on open carry or can you get a permit? I ask because I believe open carry should be done in a holster with decent retention. Safariland has a good product for that application. Best of luck with the daughter’s dates.

A side note on that, depending on your daughter’s taste in men/boys you could get the “oh shit he has a gun” response or the “cool what kind of gun is that” response.

When I carry, it will be concealed. I plan on carrying a lot, but not all the time. The licences have been applied for, just waiting on their arrival. I don’t plan on doing any open carry.

Well if they say ‘Cool what kind of gun is that?’ I know it’s time for them to leave…

Nice…
Do you feel your NRA membership benefits you, or is it a political thing?

Yes, the NRA sticker on my Land Rover and/or the JPFO shirts* keep Democrats from talking to me at the JCC so I can deadlift in peace.

RyuuBane, I agree with Pat…go with the Ruger or S&W. Keep in mind why you are purchasing this weapon…if it is for self defense you don’t want to take a chance on mis-fires. Google Hi-point and check out the reviews from people who own them. Personally, I like my Glock and also love my Springfield Arms XDM…it holds 19+1…it’s accurate…fun to shoot…and reliable. The ammo is also less expensive for the 9mm. I shot over 1,000 rounds through my XDM while doing some training and never had a malfunction of any kind.

Just for the record, It’s ok to own more than one firearm. If things go really bad in this country the problem won’t be in getting firearms, it will be getting ammo. That’s why I like having several different calibers…when I can’t find ammo for one, I usually can for the other. The 9mm is great for practice and I even use it in competition sometimes…especially if we are shooting more than 100 rounds. My favorite caliber is .40 and that’s what I carry everyday. I’m an equal opportunity shooter however, I love to shoot them all. I have a Russian 9x18, (very cheap ammo), a couple of 9mm (9x19), .40, .41, .45, .38, 357, and of course 22, and 22mag, all in handguns.

Here’s the XDM in 9mm

If you have plenty of ammo…this if fun to shoot and you can fold up and carry it just about anywhere. Kel Tec 9mm with 30 rd mag.

Unfolded…

If you have the $, The Kimber is amazingly accurate, dependable, and good looking.

Also hard to beat the, “to hell and back” reliability of the SIG.

I was just able to get my hands on one of those last week at a decent price, at least order it. Still waiting for it to ship. Perfect match for a pistol if you can share mags.

If anyone else is interested in one of the handgun caliber carbines to match a pistol, the TNW aero survival rifle might be worth a look, but the price is still a bit high. The JR carbine gets shit in every review I’ve seen. Rock River Arms makes one too, but it uses proprietary mags.

Caracal jumped on the bandwagon and released a carbine to match their 9mm pistols at Shot Show this year. I still haven’t seen any of their guns in local shops though but I’m interested in trying one out.

Yes theuofh, the 30 rnd mag will fit in my Glock 17…looks pretty wicked. Kel Tec makes these in .40 also. You will enjoy your purchase but get ready to go through several boxes of ammo faaast. You just can’t help spraying as many shells down range as fast as you can. Fiber optic site is easy to locate and they are very accurate out to nearly 100yds. Have Fun!

I ordered the .40 version. My glock is a 23 though so those mags won’t fit which is a bit of a bummer. I picked up a couple 28+ round .40 mags from a manufacturer called red, white, and blue awhile ago. They might hold 31 rounds. I haven’t test fired them, but I loaded them up and cycled them through the 23 and they fed fine. I was pleasantly surprised considering some of the aftermarket glock mags are crap.

Ammo stock is healthy right now, so I’m looking forward to throwing some down range and not feeling guilty about it afterwards.

Okay, did a little research for you, stay the hell away from the Hi-Point. Here’s a review:

I have never read one that reads this badly. Even cheap guns at least shoot strait, this one does not even do that. And it’s action is flat dangerous. Yeah, it’s cheap, but you get what you pay for. You can get a decent 9 for about 3-400 that’s not going to blow a round in you hand which I am afraid this one might, that and the safety does not work. That’s a problem you don’t want to have in a carry situation. And you want to be able to use it without shooting yourself in the hip getting the gun.
It’s not worth it. You can get a good, reliable Glock, even used and you will have a good reliable pistol that works every time and can take some punishment.

Edit: For balance, here is also a more favorable review…

I still would save my money and get something better.

I recently saw the Hi-Point 9 at a gun store. Wow, what a piece of shit. It looks like a toy gun fit and finish wise. Yeah, it was $200 bucks, I’d keep my money rather than buy that. I would say this gun barely meets all the safety requirements and such to be sold. It’s also rather large. It’s very wide. For another $100 dollars, there’s tons of better options. If you only have $200 to spend on a gun get a shotgun.

X2 I have a Kimber Custom II and I love it.
