Gun Love II

Oops. And I still don’t know why its turning my pics sideways randomly.

How my daughter’s stomach big may have saved my bacon:

I’m new to reloading, and have been prepping some 223 brass for the last couple weeks. Well on the eve of my 35th birthday I decided to load up some cartridges in the hopes of testing them Sunday afternoon on the range.

Hornady manual had the load range between 20.8 grain and 23.4 grain, Speer had it 24 through just under 26 (I believe), and the jug of powder said a 25.3 max load. Hornady being the outlier here, I choose to start at 23.1 and work up to 25 max load. 10 cartridges of each interval, 50 cartridges in total.

Loaded my first 10 at 23.1. Was feeling good, even though it was midnight, and figured, lets bang out 10 more.

Then it happened. My daughter started screaming bloody murder from her room. She’s 3. This could be a simple as a stuffed animal fell on the floor. I walked in and… Holy Christ, vomit everywhere. The next 4 and a half hours were a whirlwind of clean, washing, hair holding, back rubbing and just general parenthood. Needless to say, only the first 10 rounds were loaded on the bench.

The next morning I had 10 mins to look and figured I check the load weights from the Powder manufacturer on the web, as it only lists the Max on the bottle. Low and behold… 3 different load ranges for 55 grain bullets, and two out of the three are in line with Hornady, and only one goes to 25 grains. So that means Speer and the max load from the power list are the outliers.

So Sunday afternoon, I sat down and made the 23.1 my max charge, and loaded 40 more, progressively weaker charges than the first.

Likely won’t get to shoot these until February 8th, and may still blow off my hand, but I feel like my baby girl may have just saved me, or my rifle, a lot of strife.

Then again, I might end up with a squib on the first shot from the loads being too light, and ruining my range trip, lol.

Either way, moral of the story, try and find the silver lining. Even projectile vomit from your kids can be a positive.

Haha I read that as “my daughters stomach was saved by bacon” as if you fed her some bacon and saved her life or something. Glad you didn’t blow your hand off.

Nice man. I would keep the brace on also regardless of the last letter. Going to be really hard to prosecute someone for using it illegally and extremely hard to prove without video evidence or an admission. Not that I would shoulder it…

Exactly, and the last time I checked the ATF can’t interpret laws or meaning. That is up to the courts, but in this day and age…

I would love to meet the person who decided to announce that varying use actually reclassifies the weapon and punch him right in the dick and or vagina. I’m all about equal opportunity.

Added some magpul fde cerakote. First time cerakoting. Really simple and a much better finish than the crap USA gen 4 Glock finish.

Looks good Maiden, which sights are those? I like the smaller hi viz front sight on a Glock.

Looks good!

Thanks. 1 or two small spots I missed but no big deal. The sights are warren tactical rear and 10-8 fiber front. I originally had a warren fiber front but was consistently hitting high so I replaced it with the taller 10-8 sight and dead on now.

Edit sp

No pics, but a good day shooting. This morning I took a coworker and his wife to a local indoor range and taught them to shoot a pistol. The wife is going to get her CWP next week. Left there and drove to my match partners place. We spent a good while killing steel from 600 to 1000 with the 6 SLR that I showed a couple pages back and his .300 WM. Its the first time I’ve stretched her legs, it’s shooting 105 Amaxes at 3100fps with great accuracy, which was my goal exactly. Finished the day off by going to see American Sniper with my dad.

Thought yall would appreciate this. Dudes whole channel is great.

Shot some dot drills today and one group, and of course I pulled one. Little rusty behind the rifle but happy with how that went.

Alright guys… Pretty damn well saved up for a new toy. Not sure what I’m looking to do. I’m thinking:

Bolt Action in some large exotic/semi-exotic caliber - looking at the new Mossberg patriot’s. I love their trigger.
SR1911 - I need a 45, and also any respectful collection has a 1911 at one point or another
Glock19 - I should get my restriction lifted in January, so I need to get some practice in this summer
Build another AR. (I’m picking up two lowers now that they are cheap before the next panic.)

This is really where I’m at right now… Leaning 1911, but really like loading rifle rounds. Also open to different carry guns than the glock. Should prob go 45 for the carry gun as I’m limited to 10 round mags, unless I can get a preban, but partial to 9mm, as I’m familiar with the round.

If I’m missing anything, let me know.

On the subject of Glocks and carry guns.

I have a Glock 19. I like it. It is a Glock 19. There’s not much more to say about it.

I bought it as a first handgun, getting the idea that I’d carry it. It is, after all, quite light and not TOO thick. I’ve carried it before and I’ll carry it again, but the S&W Shield is sooooo much more comfortable that it is my go-to carry piece, even in the winter when concealment isn’t an issue.

With a 10 round limitation, I do not think the G19 would be worth lugging around. If you are set on a Glock for a carry piece, consider the G26, as it has 10 round mags in a much smaller form factor (although the same thickness as the G-19).

If you intend on carrying regularly, day-in, day-out, I would urge you to look into a single-stack 9mm (or other caliber in a similar form factor). I don’t have much experience with 1911’s, which are also single-stack, but I wouldn’t steer someone to a gun that large and heavy for a first carry piece.

I love my S&W Shield. I’ve also shot Kahr’s, all of which are single stacks. S&W also used to make aluminum-frame DA/SA single-stack 9’s, the name of which escapes me (3913, maybe?). I’ve heard good things about those too.

If you want to spend some money, Sig also has some great single-stack carry guns. Lots of options in that segment.

That said, plenty of people can and do carry a G19 every day. The thickness of the Glock is really what has me choosing my Shield nearly every time. The Shield is comfortable enough to wear all day in the summer while being moderately active and it absolutely disappears in just shorts and a t-shirt.

I really think that design is a great compromise between concealment, shooting performance, capacity and weight that really hits a sweet spot for a carry gun. Others agree, and single-stack handguns like the Shield are a very popular choice for a go-to carry piece.

That’s my $0.02.

I’d get a Tikka CTR in 260 or a single-stack/1911 in a caliber you shoot a lot, even 9mm. This way you can have one batch of ammo and don’t have to worry about loading/buying a ton of different ammo. If you don’t have a steady carry gun, I’d figure that out first though, and budget some money for experimenting with holsters.
