It’s getting better for sure. Your starting position would be better if you opened your hips a little bit more, you could try this:
Other than that, there’s not much I can say. Your back looks just barely rounded, definitely improved over before. I have seen some people miss sumo pulls at lockout due to leaning back too much and causing their knees to unlock (I remember @Vincepac1500 missing a lift in a meet due to that) so you might want to be careful how much you lean back. The rules just say to stand erect with shoulders back, anything beyond that is useless unless you can’t keep your balance or something.

Thanks. Am keen to keep getting better and making progress over the next few months, hopefully hitting some big weights at next max out opportunity.
Am moving up in weight slowly so will probably see how it goes as the weight gets heavier.
I’ve only maxed once on sumo deadlift but it seems like the reps at lowish 1rm percentages volume work that I use to build don’t really resemble deadlifts at high percentages.
Might get in some practice grinding sumo deadlifts and maintaining form as the weight gets up there
I do tend to overdo it. Like hesitating too much and tugging for a minute. Can I still have a single tug to set my hook grip / lifting straps?
This is important.
You get one any more is considered playing with it.

Thanks for vid
That tactical frog stretch was pretty painful but I’m including it in the little bit of dedicated sumo mobility work I do every other day. It seems to be working and helping bit by bit.
Am still trying to straighten out my back and lock it in completely because I can feel it can be better still.
About the leaning back, losing balance and knees unlocking. Maybe it’s because I’ve not done much work at high percentages but I’ve never once had any problems with balance or knees unlocking.
I think the lean back is part momentum, part fear of ending up like my mate who taught me sumo bombing out on deadlift because he didn’t get his shoulders back and as cringe as it sounds it looks and feels cool.
If that’s the way I want to pull is it really that disadvantageous to stick with it?
Tugs… is that innuendo?
What he gon do with one tug anyways

When you get stronger and lift bigger weights it is likely to become an issue, you are able to get away with it at the moment and it doesn’t appear that your knees unlocked but at some point it will be likely to cause you to miss lifts. Like I said, Vince missed a PR attempt in a meet because he did exactly what you are doing, he locked out the weight but proceeded to lean back unnecessarily far which made his knee unlock and it was a failed lift. Bryce Krawczyk also mentioned something about that in a video not long after he switched to sumo. So my opinion is that you can continue like that for now but eventually you will probably have to fix it, or you could just not do it and not have to worry about it in the future either.
@Vincepac1500 - what is your opinion?

I think you’r talking about the comp a while back. The 660 attempt I really wanted. Ended with only 585 opener. My recent comp I smoked my best comp pull by 130lbs. I was still adjusting to sumo. I couldn’t keep my balance at the top and the bar would dip. Then I fixed that but began having problems with locking the knees because the weight was so heavy it felt like it would hurt something to lock them hard. This is when I changed to pulling tension into the bar. In my mind picturing some of the closer plates breaking the floor as I was dropping my hips then begin the pull with the hips as high as I could get them while maintaining as close to a vertical back as possible. This fixed every problem almost instantly. Knees locked smoother. Occasionally I’ll get pulled out of position when I’m tired but not often. I like to ramble on but hopefully there’s some useful info in this post.

But to add. In the front clip it looks like he’s pulling back far. But when i watched the side view it doesn’t look too excessive. Unlocked knees may come from pulling back rather than thrusting the hips. I did that till my buddy pointed it out to me. All a matter of small tweaks to figure out what works best. That’s how get to the top.
And I don’t read my posts so have to constantly go back to edit auto corrected things.

Thanks guys.
@Vincepac1500 not sure what you’re getting at lol.
@chris_ottawa May take a bit of work but I’ll try to break the bad habit of over locking out
If you gon drive the hips thru as hard as possible on anything submaximal momentum will carry you a bit into a bit more extension /locking out then you need.
Just don’t be actively trying to lean and pull back at lockout unless you in comp and the judge is being a dick with no down command
On deadlift at least lel. How about squat and bench tho? We need some bench and squat experts up in this log especially for that poverty bench. Would tag but once again I don’t pay attention to who lifts what on these forums. Probably don’t listen to @MarkKO tho because he’s got chronic poverty bench too lel

@guineapig Im no expert, but Brian Alsruhe’s Bench and Squat Cheat Sheet videos really helped me see what I could be doing better with my technique and some of the tips helped bring both my squat and bench up. Plus, they feel alot smoother after making a few adjustments that he suggests in the videos

Finally a cold day in Melbourne. Perfect weather for lifting as I head into the city to get a workout in with a couple of my best buds at the city Doherty’s.
Deadlift
Sumo 180kg x 3,4,4,4 Rep PRs
Couldn’t decide which set was better so here’s two vids pls vote on sexiest set
Started with deadlifts for a change and went a little too ham which affected the rest of the workout.
Sumo today with different equipment (Some kinda eleiko bar) and felt massively awkward. Worked up to 180kg which moved like 170kg last week and looks like 180kg is gonna be working weight now.
Technically lifetime rep PRs because I’ve never worked with 180 before… I dunno. Will add reps over the next few weeks.
Looking to continue to implement tweaks to better sumo technique but its kinda on auto pilot now. Just need to put in the time and practice and the gains will come.
Conventional 155kg x 5,6,7 Rep PRs
Planned to hit 3 sets of 5 for a Rep PR (again because haven’t worked with 155kg before) but the weight on the bar moved and felt like three biscuits a side and with a bit of peer pressure chucked a few more reps in easy. Good news if conventional builds sumo like I’ve been told
Bench 90kg x 6,6,6,5
More bench volume but feeling extra mad about that poverty bench because all my mates are beast benchers.
Squat 130kg x 5,5,5,4,3
No vid cos was absolutely smashed between sets
Wanted 5x5 at 130kg for a Volume PR but was drained and had nothing left in the quads. Got in some work and called it a day.
Deadlift is in a good place now so maybe time to focus other lifts

Gonna skip talking about that sexy colour matched outfit tho…but the only thing sexier than that was dem sumo deadlifts. 4 biscuits were moving faster than 170kg other time. looks like you could pull that all day.
The first vid was the better of the two IMO. I was all like:

I think I can take 90% of the credit for your sumo gains. @chris_ottawa and @Vincepac1500 can fight over the other 10%
I think so too. Choose a lift and lets get at it
Or do deadlift only lel

Ha I know your secret. Photoshop and other editing things to add plates and speed up your lifts… or the dreaded fake plates ala Brad Dingleberry

Btw I choose Squat.
To be honest Squat gains are slowing down should I drop the weight and build up again with reps or throw on belt and knee sleeves ( which give me 20kg)?
