Guayaki: Yerba Mate

Got into the green tea kick a few months back.
Read something about this “Yerab Mate from Guayakai”.

So I got some. Doesn’t tatse very good. But realy feel the kick of the caffeiene! I love this stuff. I got the loose leaf, so I have to press it in a french press. 1 glass in the AM or afternoon and I’m going all day!

Anyone else try this stuff?

I’ve never gotten the loose leaf stuff, but I’ve tried most the RTD ones as well as the tea bag style (Mint and Chocolate)…I love them.

I usually have the “traditional flavor” RTD one all day at work…

Good stuff!

With the day off today. I made a cup of loose leaf yerba mate, an made my day of cleaning a breeze!!!

I’m a big fan but the unflavored stuff has a very strong taste that I would liken to tobacco almost.

I hate the taste of Yerba Mate.

Ahhh yerba mate. It can be delicious or absolutely foul. I don’t really care for the taste of the original Guayaki flavor, but the mint is pretty good. I bought some loose yerba mate and had better luck with this method:

  1. Dampen the yerba mate that you are about to use with some cold water and let it sit for a minute or two.
  2. Heat up some water so that it’s hot, but not scalding/boiling.
  3. Pour it on top of the dampened yerba mate.
  4. Add sugar/lemon/etc to taste. I don’t add anything.
  5. Drink!

To keep the loose tea from getting in my mouth, I either pack the tea in teabags or drink the tea through a filtered straw (you can buy them in a tea shop or through Guayaki’s website).

If and when you want a second cup, just pour some more hot water on top of the old yerba mate. In my experience, a good cup of yerba mate won’t be too bitter but with have a very earthy taste. It’s not for everyone, but I think it gives a unique buzz that I can’t get from tea or coffee. Happy drinking.

Gauyaki is a scam. I buy 1 kilo of pure leaf yerba mate from El Chapparell meat store in Arlington, VA for 5$. And it tastes way better.

I’d stick with some good old fashion green tea.

It’s an acquired taste for sure. The Western palate is just not accustomed to bitter drinks. I’ve come to love them.

This stuff is huge in Argentina. Any given day you will see people drinking it everywhere in the parks of Buenos Aires. They put it in a bowl and repeatedly pour hot water over the leaves, much like the method someone mentioned above. They pass it around in a circle like its a bong or something lol.

It is a potent stimulant and takes the appetite away like nothing Ive ever experienced, which is probably why the women there are so skinny.

I learned to love it. I switch it out with green tea when I need a change.

For a while, I would take a tea bag and just put it in room temperature water and drink that throughout the day.

Not sure if it was just a placebo effect, but it seemed to calm my nerves.
