why sad I’m presuming? I don’t know I guess I’ve never hiked to the top of a mountain or seen an amazing spectacle of nature and not thought “Yep there is no God”
…and yet, that same thought would not add anything to the experience for me.

Iow, the majesty of nature is not to equal god to me…

Well, I won’t. Get my hopes up, that is. But if it happens, let me know. We’ll exchange Christmas cards every year through the mail.

I prayed for you for quite a while just this morning during my pre-dawn walk with God and my dog. Sloth too. And Pat and Brother Chris and Katzenjammer and Push and Mike and Cockney Blue and FightingIrish and Cappednplanit (however he spells that), but this morning you and AlisaV got the most attention. Other times it’s somebody else. It depends on how the Spirit leads (I don’t pray the same things for all of these folks btw)

Would it kill ya to download and listen my pastor? I watched your movie didn’t I? I even watched Religulous on Mike’s recommendation though I owned it already. I have no illusions about your response, but I am interested.

…ha! I pride myself on the fact that i’ve never, not even once, sent a christmas card to anyone. I simply prefer to tell people i love them. I love you, Slothy!
It doesn’t make me feel any particualr way. People prayed and do pray for me. Like I told you a while back I cannot help but love somebody I’m praying for.
ephrem wrote:<<< …so it’s all about the pay-off then?
It’s all about grateful obedience and hoping the same gracious gifts upon others that have been so freely lavished upon yourself. It’s all about recognizing that Jesus took a man whose life 's mission was to kill Christians and destroy the early church, a man who was on his way to do that very thing, and transform him from Saul of Tarsus to Paul the apostle whose majestic writings became the majority of the New Testament.

None of you people here are anything like a tough case for God. When he saves someone by loving grace he delights in that same grace being shed abroad in their hearts by them fervently desiring that those who are yet dead in sin and enemies of the most high God may be made alive together with themselves in Christ. Yes, as Zeb says there are rewards in heaven, but the “payoff” has already been made and I did not make it.

…i’m listening to it right now. He already affirmed to the congregation that they’re more special for listening to his preachings than other church goers [parishoners]. He goes on to diminish science in favor of god… let’s continue…

…T, now he’s making clear distinctions between his parish and Jews [science], Greeks [wisdom] and asks, “what are you?” Racist? I think so… let’s continue…

…mass-brainwashing. Why do you listen to this guy? He goes on and on how god’s message can only come to you through the pulpit, through the preachers. He’s setting himself up in a place of power, a place of influence and knowledge only he has acces to. He’s making himself god by proxy. Why do you listen to this guy? Let’s continue…

…“revival or churchhistory does not know revival except through preachers of the bible (…)”…

…okay, i’m 25 minutes in and i don’t know if i can listen to him screaming any longer. He’s a demagogue, T. He’s using emotion to elicit a respons from his parish that is his own, not theirs. By doing so he’s cementing his position within the parish as a leader, a man you look up to. And by doing so you’re abdicating yourself to him, to a person; not god…

…thank you for having me listen to him T, it confirmed how i feel about this kind of evangelising, and altough it helped you out of your misery; it will never be my cup of tea…

I told you I had no illusions about your response now didn’t I =] I’ll give ya credit for being a stand up guy and reciprocating though.

EDIT: You did misinterpret everything he said btw. Pretty much along the same lines that you misinterpret most of what I say.

It’s not. See Obama’s preacher.

…that is because i am not emotionally involved with this guy T. I’ve not made an investment i have to protect, and because of that i hear him as he is: a sincere but misguided demagogue who, in an attempt to make things better for his flock, would rather tell lies than truths…

We all work toward something whether we know it or not. As the Bible says why store up treasure on earth where it can be lost or stolen. Why not store up treasure in heaven where we can spend eternity?

…no thanks…

I’m really not makin fun of you, I actually did laugh out loud, but not in any way derisively I assure you.

…do you believe your preacher, T? Does he get you all fired up by preaching the gospel? Do you look up to him for all he done for his community? Do you go to him with questions, doubts or issues?
ephrem wrote:
…do you believe your preacher, T? >>>
I believed about 98% of what he believes looooong before I knew he existed. Do I believe his vision for the city of Detroit? I would say yes. I do know that God has done mighty public redemptive works in the past and there’s every reason to believe He will again and Detroit is just the place for it. >>>
ephrem wrote:Does he get you all fired up by preaching the gospel? >>>
<<< I’m all fired up already. Am I as demonstrative as some of the other people there? Not usually, but he’ll get some response from me.
ephrem wrote:Do you look up to him for all he done for his community? >>>
“Look up to” is the wrong way to characterize how I view any pastor. I admire the fact that he practices what he preaches. He goes out in that warzone of a neighborhood and personally leads people to Jesus as do many other members. Half that church is tattooed and scarred up street people. Some in very competent leadership.
ephrem wrote:<<< Do you go to him with questions, doubts or issues? >>>
Not really. I’ve spent some time with him, but more with other members. Regardless of what you think you perceive, that brother has not an ounce of pretense or celebrity about him and make no mistake. He meets with hundreds of other pastors for prayer and collaboration in bringing the gospel to this lost city. He has no messianic “I am the one” complex which would be grievous sin. He does denounce many local churches (the world over) as powerless carnally enslaved clubhouses that have long ago surrendered to a self induced post modern heretical death. One of the things that drew me to him.

Another was his uncompromising proclamation of the biblical family as God’s utterly foundational social unit and institution in the earth. His being a Westminster Calvinist (who even reads Van Til!!!) was the clincher. As with anyone he’s not perfect and every so often he’ll say something that leaves a puzzled look on my face, but he is also not the church. He is the senior pastor. There are many other church officials and they don’t all agree on every single thing.
