I do this all the time. I’m pretty quiet with most of my work and I’m definitely not a screamer, but the controlled exhalation helps on the heavy stuff. It has to do with regulating intrabdominal pressure or something like that.
At my old gym at high school there was this old guy we nick named Harry Hardcore. As it was a highschool gym there were always a lot of young guys in there, i dont know what Harry was trying to prove, but he always seemed to be secretly competing and trying to out lift you.
You would be doing dumbell presses or something, he would spot me doing it and start doing the exact same exercise. He would grunt and scream loudly then at the end of his set he would slam his weights down onto the floor, give you the evil eye, then strut away like he was king kong.
He was trying to be tough and intimidating but he was really quite a joke. I kinda miss Haz he was a good laugh.
