THOUGHTS?
My first thought is that it’s weird that you think a gay green lantern is ‘unsafe’ for children. That’s an unabashedly homophobic statement. wtf is unsafe? that a child might find out that people can be gay? that you as a parent might have to explain this to him?
And last time I checked, most mainstream comic books aren’t about the super hero ‘banging’ his girlfriend… so why would making the super hero gay make the comic book overly sexualized? This doesn’t make sense. You think DC’s planning on making Green Lantern into gay pornography?
It has nothing to do with pornography or any type of stylized/sexualized man on man action.(I mean I believe there will be some, cause in most comics you’ll see Scott Summers awake from bed with Jean Gray beside him…etc.)
So no, I don’t think DC plans on going on a Hentai parade with the Green Lantern comic series, it’s just that personally I don’t think Homosexuality is right, so I don’t think it should be fed to little childeren. I don’t think it’s appropriate subject matter for small childeren. Just as I don’t think certain movies or sexaulized media is appropriate subject matter for small childeren either. Childeren are very impressionable, and the comic book market is still largely aimed at people 17 and under.
And as far as me being homophobic…well I went to the largest college for acting and most my professors and classmates were gay…also I currently work in San Francisco…lol

LOL at “homophobia.” No one is “afraid” of queers.
Having gay sex is extremely unhealthy (far worse, tham, say smoking) and gays overwhelmingly report that they are unhappy and unsatisfied with life.
It’s not normal behavior and has not been tolerated in almost any society, in the world, for thousands of years.
So, yes, we should not teach children that deviant behavior is normal or OK. It’s not.
Now, will I discriminate against you? Nope.
Everyone has their cross, and yours is a desire to have hairy men pound your ass raw in rest stops along the highway.
That’s your business.
But will I teach my (future) children that it’s OK to get pounded in the ass at rest stops? No. I will teach them that engaging in gay sex is an almost certain path to a miserable life.
What if you have a gay child?
No different than any alcoholic or deviancy. I’d still love the child, but I wouldn’t pretend that what they do is “OK.”
It’s not OK. It’s destructive and a horrid way to live.

SO what you’re saying is it’s okay t have anal sex with a woman?
Poop is poop.

No, I didn’t address that one way or the other.

You’re making a strawman argument (if you don’t know what that is, look it up). You put a whole bunch of words in my mouth, because you don’t have any real argument with what I said. First off, you assumed I was gay (I’m married to a woman FYI). Then you went into arguments about getting pounded at rest stops? lol@that. What you’re talking about there has nothing to do with straightness or gayness. Truckers fuck prostitutes at rest stops. Does that mean they represent the whole or majority of straight people? of course not. You’re associating gayness with promiscuity. Straight people are just as promiscuous (a big reason most marriages end in divorce).
Now for the rest of your points. Show evidence that gay sex in a monogamous relationship is unhealthier than smoking. Your point, as I understand it, is really that promiscuity is dangerous. I won’t argue against that. Gay sex in and of itself is not.
Gays report being unhappy. You think this might have something to do with the way they’re treated by ignorant people? Just a thought.
It has not been tolerated by many societies in history? That’s just plain false. Crack open a book or two and read about Ancient Greece, the Renaissance period in Europe, the entire history of Asia, ancient Egypt, and ancient Rome, just to name some off the top of my head.
Just because you don’t know about homosexuality in world history doesn’t mean it’s not there.
If you can’t come up with a better argument than “I ain’t gon’ let none of my kin get butt fucked at dem gas stations, no sir”, then GTFO.
I just wanted to say I agree with many of your points. Great post.
It’s really funny how Alan Scott ring’s weakness isn’t yellow but wood, sort of like the Young Avengers charater Asgardian who changed his name to Wiccan because well come on ass gaurdian really??

what you’re saying here is more reasonable, and I totally get that. This is just a difference of opinion between us. The only things I had a problem with was the mischaracterization of what would be expected in a comic book with a gay hero, and the idea that printing such a comic book would produce an unsafe environment for a child. I just went off on Ruffian because of a similar issue with what he said. It’s fine to disagree about social issues, but I absolutely hate when people make up facts about what the social issues are in the first place. That’s always a problem, no matter what side of an argument you’re on.
From what I’ve seen in comics, they seem to be aimed at my age demographic and higher. Sure kids read them, but the bulk of the material isn’t catered towards them that’s for sure.
(Ultimate) Colossus = Gay
Northstar = Gay
Dakken (Wolverine’s cloned “son”) = Bisexual
Shatterstar and Rictor (X-Force) = Gay
Just some of Marvel’s gay super heros…

It’s not so much that there is a gay superhero, it’s that they changed him. They “improved” him by making him gay.
Would they ever take a gay character and re-write him to make him straight? No.
That’s a distorted historical perspective. The fact that most major comic book characters originated decades ago is the reason there is a lack of major gay heroes. That would be the reason to re-write straight characters as gay, and not vice-versa.
It’s not as if it’s an “improvement” as in gay is better. It’s simply better to make superheroes more culturally diverse as societies prejudices have changed (at least in DC’s opinion).
You know Nick Fury used to be white, right? Any complaints about the fact that they ‘changed him’? Didn’t think so.
Nick Fury still is white it’s the ultimate universe that he is Sam Jackson
Comics are notorious for having different universes with heros being different races…it’s annoying sometimes remembering which universe has which but thats about it.
Personally, I could give a shit.

Yes, that and storlines that crossover to other timelines and comics, can be a monumental pain in the ass.
did this character come off as ‘gay’ previously? I must say I’d find it irritating, if I was a fan, that a character was re-written on such a deep level
Yeah and apparently the new Batwoman is gay as well…I mean I totally see what they are trying to do. I think with so many kids being bullied, Marvel & DC wanted to have characters that respresent strength that gay kids can look up to just as most children look up to Superman, Batman, Wolverine…so they take one of the most reconizable superheros and make an alternate universe where he is gay. I see why for many reasons why DC & Marvel chose to go this route…I just don’t think subject matter wise, it’s appropriate for kids.
And I disagree, I think the market of comic books is largely aimed at kids…most people think it’s aimed at adults because they grew up on comic books themselves and continue to enjoy them. They see other people in the comic store…grown adults buying for themselves…but they started as kids as well.
