yes it exists. Friends of mine back in South Africa won it…and never bothered to come to the states. We entered every year, never won it. But I DO have a green card now, being here for 7 years finally paid off

is it true that you also get a green card by investing a certain sum in the US?
I think that was an offer to the Hong Kong Chinese, maybe there still is something similar.

It does, but for your sake do NOT apply through any company advertising in an e-mail. Most of them will ask you for money while the process is free. Apply directly through the links doogie posted.

If “by investing a certain sum in the US” means founding a company in the US and creating at least 10 American jobs, yes. You will get a Green Card if you do that.
Just sending money here is not enough – job creation is the key.

If you have a million US dollars, probably. Here are the full requirements:
"
Employment-Based Green Cards
EB-5 - Investor Employment Creation Visa
- Are you investing in a business in the US?
- Is the business new or are you buying into a restructured business?
- Are you investing at least $500,000 if the business is in a rural, high unemployment area or designated target investment area or $1,000,000 if located elsewhere?
- Is your investment in the form of cash, equipment, inventory, other tangible property, cash equivalents and indebtedness secured by assets owned by the entrepreneur?
- Is the investment “at risk”?
- Can you document that the source of the funds is legitimate?
- Will the investment result in the creation of at least ten full-time jobs for American workers?
General Notes: The USCIS scrutinizes these cases carefully. While technically the investment and job creation need not take place until after granting the green card, in practice, the USCIS will deny unless the investment and job creation take place before the application was submitted.
